  • Keeping the show runnin'...

Beatin' a dead horse here, but...

Went to Midvale last night. Not a *super* show, but, not a bad show, either.

The weather was looking *iffy* at best at about 3:00. Rained most of the day, but it was gone by about 4:00 when we left the house. By the time we got to the track at about 4:45, they were hot-lapping.

A few Late Models stayed home (weather, engine issues, couple of guys had prom last night - not *together*, though...LOL), so it was a bit of a short field, but the three other classes had decent fields: 18 Modifieds, 27 Compacts, 20 street stocks. The Mini Truck class....ehhh. Only three of those.

With the electronic transponders, they ran group qualifying. Groups of five or six cars came out, ran about 8-10 hot laps, and they took the quick lap of each car.

Heat races were inverted starts - fast guys in the back. For the features, they drew a pill with a "4" or more to invert. Only race that only had the top four inverted was the street stocks. I'm not counting the Mini Trucks...LOL...

Compacts were split into an "A" and "B" feature.

Modified race was the best of the night, with a couple of late-race restarts.

Racin' started *promptly* at 6:30pm....we were on our way out at 9:45 with five divisions. Had just a few small incidents...including a Compact that took out the welding shack in the pits during the heat races. :P

Kept the show moving. Very few small delays, even with the track "weeping" in turns three and four all night. Dollar hot dog night. No pace car; racers *knew* where they supposed to line up. Not a *great* crowd as the weather may have kept people home. It *was* a little chilly last night (in the mid-50s at race time). Racin' season up here is late April-September. Not the *long* season we're used to in Florida. Everyone was anxious to go racin' after sittin' through a rough winter here.

Transponders and raceceivers are clearly the way to go. The NLMS rents their transponders on a race by race basis which may be the fairest way to spread the cost throughout the sport. I do not know if any Florida tracks have the equipment for using transponders and I suspect it is fairly pricey up front, If I am wrong about the cost then shame on the tracks for not doing it.

In the fall of 1997, I ordered the first stock car transponder system for the province of Québec. 2 kits of loops, one for the Karting track and one for the oval, one suitcase charging system, 32 red(260) transponders, and 10 yellow one for karting, plus all the electronic stuff needed to operated.

I ordered that from the AMB Motherhouse in the Netherland. They did not even had a US office then.

          $42,000 canadian....and change.

But today, there are many outfit that sells them cheaper.
