Cooper Stadium, the old baseball stadium of the Columbus Clippers, OH (AAA International League) is no more. The grand old structure has sat empty since the Team moved to a new downtown ballpark a few years ago.
Piles of concrete and steel still remain for recycling in the once outfield.
Built in 1932, this was a gem at the time, and now is in demolition mode.
However, plans are now that the infield/grandstands are going to remain somewhat. Now, through help of city hall figures, plans call for the removal of the 3rd base side stands and dugouts, and keeping the first base sides and home plate curve/plate sides and press boxes......and creating a new 1/2 mile semi-banked asphalt oval for a race a 20 card schedule.
It is to also have an Auto Research Facility on campus, whatever that means.
It will seat 8500 fans. This is good........even for old baseball fans such as myself. It is set to open after next year.
Columbus Motor Speedway, a 1/3 mile semi-banked asphalt oval, NASCAR sanctioned, is on the south side of town, and still runs to this day. We'll see how this plays out.
