The #47 1958 Pontiac you have pictured above sailing over the guardrail is Jack Smith in the 1958 Southern 500 at Darlington.

Here is a sequence shot of the same wreck.



In a 100-mile stretch of this race five cars either plowed through or sailed over the inadequate guard rail, however Smith’s wreck was probably the most spectacular.

Here is the aftermath of the wreck where spectators are gathered around Smith’s Pontiac when it stopped up-side down in the parking lot after just missing a photographer’s stand (see scaffold in forefront) by inches.

Even though he was unhurt, Smith developed a fear for this track as a result of this bone jarring wreck and consequently hired substitute drivers for future races here.



Fireball Roberts survived this crashfest and went on to win in his #22 1957 Chevy 5-laps ahead of second place Buck Baker.

I met Tiny once at Auburndale Speedway when we ventured over there one night with our Tornado car to race. He stopped and chatted with me just like one of the boys and I never forgot that.

Sometime after his death his wife was auctioning off some of his stuff. One of the items was the flight helmet he wore flying jets in the service. I hopped into that auction just like I was going to do something but man they left me in the dust fast! I don’t remember what it went for but it was way over my expectations. LOL.

Here's John Gamble in the 34, but I don't know the drivers in the 38 and 39. They're raced around Barbervilles and Ocala during this time, early 80s.

The 38 car is David Viers. He was a regular at VCS for many years. Also ran pavement at New Smyrna for awhile. Last I heard he was the head of the Volusia County Fair. Heck of a nice guy! His son lost both legs in a farm accident a number of years ago.

That picture of Ivedent in the enduro at Volusia brings back some memories for me. I was in that race. I had an old Monte Carlo that I picked up for like $150. Of course I had no idea who Ivedent Lloyd was at the time but I do remember the car and the fact that I had already passed him and wasn't even pushing it at the time and he ended up winning the race. My race (and the Monte Carlo for that matter) came to a rather abrupt end when I encountered a knot of traffic coming off of turn 4. I was trying to find a hole to thread through the traffic when all of a sudden, like magic, a hole opened up. Just as I commited to it I realized WHY the hole opened up! There was a black mustang sitting dead in the track FACING traffic! I drilled him head on and ended up against the wall on the front straight. Miraculously, nobody was injured but the cars were toast. In those days when a car died on the track during an enduro they just LEFT them there and the remainder of the field had to avoid them for the rest of the race. I always thought that I had that race won if I'd been able to finish it! You know the drill, coulda, shoulda, would've..........

Dick Trickle in his only appearance in the #63 Purina Hi-Pro / Schnell Motorsports Ford outside of Rick Mast in the #1 Hooters Pontiac in the 1996 Daytona 500.

This was also Schnell Motorsports one and only foray into NASCAR’s premier series.

Trickle was the first one out in the race with a blown engine.

Hey, Jim, any idea who the other cars/drivers are in that pic? Looks like maybe Stanford's #69 (Scarborough) on his side, maybe one of the Mitton cars on the outside of Yow, and possibly either Jimmy Alvis (#21) or the other Mitton car with a rigged-up body? Just curious as to if you might know or not ;-)

Hey Jimmy,

Yeah, I was curious too about that when I dug it up but the original pic is no clearer than this scanned version so I can't tell who is on his side in front of Yow or who is on the outside of him.

However, Jimmy Cope was in the #21 for Mitton in 1981 and the way he kept his sheet metal drug-off at the time I assume that's likely him with patched-up fenders behind Yow.

You wouldn't happen to know who ended up with that car, would you? Looks an awful lot like the 3rd design Howe that I bought from Dave Rosenfield. I put a fab fiberglass 84 Caddy Seville body on it, wiped the front clip off of it trying to knock the wall down at New Smyrna, Mark Gibson bought the remains from me, clipped it and ran it for awhile. Don't know what happend to it from there.
