  • Volusia - WOW!!

Went to VSP last night at the last minute, mostly because tonight looks like a rain-out, so was really ready for a racing fix... VSP has got it all together this year... they've made a few good changes to make things better for the fans... The sign in for the pits on the grandstand side has been moved to a better location... The Budweiser tent has been moved from the midway to turn one, so you can actually watch the racing while you eat/drink and get warm... Brand new turn one grandstand where I sat last night was awesome... It looks like they have made some improvements to the lighting and the electronic position tower in the infield is a nice add... The PA system was actually working well, just need better announcers who give the line-up before the race starts...
As for the racing... incredible to say the least... The Mod feature was worth the price of admission... Track was a bit rough but incredibly tacky... Around 60 mods in the pits and I was told there should be more later in the week but several teams are stuck in the weather still trying to get to Florida... About 24-25 Sprint cars practiced with a few times in the low 13's... I think Cody Darrah was fast at about a 137 mph average... Will keep an eye on the weather for tonight but it's supposed to clear for Thursday, so getting itchy... Will also be at NSS for the opening night of the World Series on Friday...

Strickler Tops NASCAR Stars In DIRTcar Nationals Thriller

Austin Dillon, Kenny Wallace pace field early during Volusia opener

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 11, 2014 — On a night when NASCAR superstars invaded Volusia Speedway Park to race DIRTcar UMP Modifieds, it was Kyle Strickler battling back against Jeff Babcock on Tuesday to claim the first victory of the 43rd Annual DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

Austin Dillon and Kenny Wallace paced the field early in the 20-lap main event, but Strickler and Babcock worked their way to the front, swapped the lead back and forth before Strickler finally powered to the lead for good with two laps to go in the opener of the 12-night event.

“Usually on a racetrack this fast you don’t see racing that good,” said Strickler, of Mooresville, N.C. “Jeff and I hung out at Eldora and he’s a hell of a racer. I knew he would race me clean. This is probably one of the fastest racetracks I’ve raced on. It’s an amazing feat for us to come down here and do this well right off the bat.”

As fast as Dillon and Wallace were early in the A-main, it was impressive the way Strickler and Babcock continued to push forward.

“They put their race suits on just like we do,” Strickler said. “The stuff they do on Sunday is completely different. I commend those guys for coming out, Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, the Dillons. If you look at the speed charts they were way out in front of us in the beginning, but the track came to us, the car came to me.”

Of course, winning the opener of this storied event often bodes well, and it doesn’t hurt to collect one of the hugely popular gator trophies.

“It’s awesome, this is a one of a kind, unique trophy,” Strickler said. “I always wanted one, now we have one for the mantel. Hopefully we’ll have a few more by the end of the week.”

Also Tuesday night at Volusia, high-speed 410 sprint cars took to the half-mile for a night of practice before the laps count for real beginning on Wednesday night. Joey Saldana turned the fastest lap of the night at 13.010 seconds.

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 22. Beginning Wednesday night, the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars begin racing in conjunction with the second night of action for DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.

Stay home... very nasty weather moving in by around 6-7 pm and probably last all night... but... extended forecast shows no rain and warming temps after a cold one tomorrow thru next week... Daytona forecast shows a low of 39 for Thursday night... that means it will be around freezing or just below at VSP...
However... Temp at race time a week from Friday (Trucks at DIS - Evans Memorial at NSS)... around 70...
