It was at Darlington, David Pearson came in for a pit stop and he thought it was a 2 tire stop and the crew had loosened the lugs on the left side and he didn't see them. He took off out of the pits and at the end of pit row the left 2 tires came off. On Monday morning the Wood Brothers fired him. Later in life the Wood Brothers said that was the worst mistake they ever made, firing David Pearson. If you every see that race on replay, I would have to say it was one of the best races I've attended, that was the race that Darrell Waltrip and Richard Petty were passing each other in each turn, back and forth. And now you know the rest of the story. Good night and God Bless.

Who remembers the same thing happening to Dale Earnhardt? The 2 left sides came off, and the crew refused to let the roll-back driver load the car, instead insisting to jack up and install the 2 tires right on the apron of the turn 1 banks.
Nascar always made exceptions for Earnhardt and his crew, but this one was so outrageous, it was sickening. No penalty at all for Earnhardt, no penalty for Childress, and a whopping $100 fine per man on the pit crew. They carry that in their pockets. The assholes in Daytona (Nascar) made a mockery of their own rules, and the rest of their drivers that day.
