  • Powell Memorial Race to move to Volusia County Speedway in 2014 !

I received a call from James today that he has a chance to move the Powell Memorial back to dirt and at Volusia close to his home. We at Citrus understand and wish James and the Memorial the best. We will still run a 100 Lap Late Model Race on that night in June.

Sadly the prestige of this race is really losing its effect the more they move it. I understand why they moved it from BRP but to move it to VSP because it is closer to the powells home? Im sorry but that sounds more of a selfish reason than anything.

Actually the Powells raced at Volusia for many years and were a big part of things there for a long time, so it's a homecoming of sorts...

Photos are of Buddy Powell in 1984 and James in 1988...

I agree with ancrdave. If it can't be Ocala this is the next logical choice. Tis a shame that things didn't work out with Bubba and am still not sure what really went wrong there, I also agree that multiple moves to multiple venues does degrade the importance and meaning of the event. Lets hope this becomes a long term solution as this family has made a tremendous contribution to racing in the state of Florida and deserves the recognition.

As happens too often, 'alcohol was involved'. Wasn't there to hear & see it all for myself, but that's the root of it.

I'd sure love to see it switch back to a mid-week show. That was when it had, in my opinion, the most attention. Back when there was NO competition from any other track, and you'd see cars from all the other tracks, track owners, promoters, officials, announcers, fans..... these people are race fans first, and they LOVED going somewhere that had NO conflict with their own obligations.

Asphalt tracks, dirt tracks, EVERYONE had that day off, and would make it there.

Hell, I think even Carol Wicks would show up....!

I agree on the Mid week show idea but we are gonna get Florida and South Georgia drivers based on our style of dirt late models. I agree it belongs on dirt and Volusia is a great choice but a Mid week show on asphalt would possibly draw out of state drivers if promoted correctly.

                Frassy!

That is one race I hate missing. But they keep getting further and further away and due to health reasons it's really hard for me. This race is so special to me and even if I cant go, the Powells are in my heart and in my soul. Love them.
I think its good that it will be dirt once again but if I had a wish i would wish it was at DS...lol Just so I could go for sure. Volusia is just too far.
