  • Our cars through the years...

Here's a bunch of our cars that we've run through the years in Florida, and some with the Stricklands and other drivers. This is not ALL of the cars we've run, but it certainly is most of them. My brother, Scott, is currently piloting the black #12 Monte Carlo (listed as "2006 Orlando Speedworld") at Orlando. I had to resize the file, so you may not be able to read all the drivers' names.

Here they are, starting at the top left:

1977 - Dave Scarborough, Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa, FL
1978 - Chargin' Charlie Reagan, Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa, FL (pic was actually taken in the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn at I-4 and 50th St., which sponsored our cars for years over there)
1979 - Jimmy Cope, DeSoto Memorial Speedway, Bradenton, FL (Jimmy's FIRST Late Model ride)
1980 - Billy Gill, DeSoto Memorial Speedway, Bradenton, FL (Billy is the father of many-time Hooter's Pro Cup champ Bobby Gill)

    Second row:
1981 - Jim Childers, Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa, FL (we won a lot of races in 1981-82; had a big rivalry with Donny Stanford and Dave Scarborough those years...)
1982 - Jim Childers, Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa, FL (this was our first "offset" car, a Dillon built by Buzzie)
1983 - Jim Childers, Sunshine Speedway, St. Pete, FL (this was supposed to be a copy of Jim Sauter's 1983 ASA Camaro)
1984 - Jim Childers, Citrus County Speedway, Inverness, FL

    Third row:
1985 - Bryan Wescott, Sunshine Speedway, St. Pete, FL (our first "Outlaw" style body)
1986 - Bryan Wescott, Sunshine Speedway, St. Pete, FL (Bryan got hurt in this car in the summer of '86 there at Sunshine)
1988 - Jim Childers, Sunshine Speedway, St. Pete, FL (our "comeback" year after being out of racing for over a year after Bryan's crash)
1990 - Junior Purcell, Tom Stimus' DeSoto Speedway (we won the very first Florida Pro race, I believe...I was in the Navy at the time, and I think this was the race where Junior and Billy Bigley got into it on the last lap...)

    Fourth row:
1991 - Junior Purcell, Tom Stimus' DeSoto Speedway (backed 'er into the wall...)
1992 - John Gertsner, Lakeland International Speedway (the old 1/4 mile with the big ditch in turn three...)
1993 - Tony Watson, Auburndale Speedway (I think this was an UGLY race car...sorry Dad...LOL)
1994 - Larry Moyer, Sunshine Speedway, St. Pete, FL (our first "non-Camaro" bodied car)

    Fifth row:
1995 - Larry Moyer, Sunshine ACTION Speedway, St. Pete, FL
2003 - Scott McKinley, Orlando Speed World, Orlando, FL (my brother's first SLM ride - I got to drive this car in practice - once...)
2006 - Scott McKinley, Orlando Speed World, Orlando, FL

    Sixth row
2003 - Jim Rider, Orlando Speed World, Orlando, FL (we crewed on this car a few times; this was our first attempt at a Sunbelt race)
1986 - Donnie Strickland, Hialeah Speedway, Hialeah, FL (we went All-Pro racing with the Stricklands in 1986 and '87, even got on TV a coupla times at Nashville )
1997 - Donnie Strickland, Orlando Speed World, Orlando, FL (I was told that this was a Hooter's Super Cup race, a division created for short track TV to compete with NA$CAR's then-All Pro Series; again, I was in the Navy at the time and out of state...)

That one picture, Larry Moyer 5th row down, ran the Fort Wayne Tracks in '1978 to 1983, Late Models, or such. Sponsered by Rock Radio 104, Moyer Trucking, also a Title one of those years. Caught him at Volusia infield around 1984, said he had get out of that Fort Wayne area fast, was now a pool builder in the Tampa Area. Last I heard of him, he had to skip out of Tampa quickly. Maybe ran Sunshine with a claer see-through plexi-glass body.

Little known fact... Larry Moyer was the very first to bring Hooters into Nascar as a sponsor. They bought a former Rusty Wallace Kodiak Pontiac, changed the number from 27 to 07, and had Hooters on the quarter panels. I don't even think it was a corporate sponsorship, just the one restaurant on Ulmerton Rd. in the St. Pete/Clearwater area, not far from Sunshine Speedway.

Larry did, in fact, also have a see-through LM he raced at Sunshine, and was also a one time ARCA Champion.

Yeah, Moyer ran that "Chevy Under Glass" at St. Pete and I believe they also ran it at Bradenton a few times. They also had a team car, the 21, with Pletcher, after he had been with Mitton. The first few months of the lexan car, the scorers at Sunshine complained that they couldn't even see the car on the backstretch, so they (Moyer) "tinted" the Lexan a smoke color, like some teenager would do to his little ricer...LOLOLOLOLOL....

As far as us getting "hooked up" with Moyer...I don't remember exactly. Alls I remember is that in '86, Bryan got wrecked at St. Pete and hurt. We were out of a car (chassis), so Dad went All-Pro racing with the Stricklands for the rest of '86 and most of '87. Our car owner, Bob Kirk, then bought a new chassis (might have been a used chassis) from Moyer, I believe, in the summer of '87. We put Childers back in the car for '87 and '88. After that, I had moved out of the house with my girlfriend (soon to be ex-wife...LOL...I was all of 19 years old in 1989), and didn't really go to the races all that much with Dad in those years. I had also joined the Navy, and had moved out of state, but Dad would send me racing stuff when I was out on the boat. That was during most of the '90s. I got back down here in 1999.

Just wish I had a job and the $$$ that would allow me to go to the races as much as I miss 'em...y'all keep me up to date here on Karnac

Oh - and Dave (and Marty and the rest of y'all)...'preciate all you do to keep the memories alive. I mean that.
