  • Remembering Channel 95....

Back in the 60's, Friday evenings saw my entire family head out to the old Orlando Raceway... On the way there and on the way home we listened to WLOF "Channel 95"... This was Orlando's biggest "Top 40" radio station and drew incredible market shares of just under 50% for several years... Of course, these were the days of local ownership of radio stations and real DJ's who were true "personalities" rather than cue-card readers... The music was incredible in those days when top forty ranged from rock, to pop, to R&B and so on... Today's music just plain sucks!! The evening jock for many years was "The Weird Beard" Bill Vermillion... He was the guy that got me interested in the radio business... I spent a lot of time at the station bugging him about everything and calling him on the phone... He was a super guy... When I went to Sebring in 1967, I ran into him at the race and found out he was also interested in photography and we spent some time walikng around shooting pictures of the race... Unfortunately Bill passed on from cancer about two weeks ago... Bob Keith, who was the announcer at Orlando during most of the 60's was also a DJ at Channel 95 for a few years and eventually got elected to the Orlando City Commission in the early 70's... I just found a website that has all kinds of info about my favorite old radio station... Anybody who lived around Orlando at that time remembers Channel 95... Thought I'd post the "Funderful Forty" from three weeks during the period from 1965-67... These old songs should bring back some memories!!

      Oldies

Don't listen to him Dave, I don't think you are THAT old.

Hey, I remember doing the STROLL to some of those songs. Good ole Donna Steveson and I used to jitter bug on skates to a bunch of those songs at the skating rink on 66th Street in St. Pete. That's when I used to smoke and had the smokes rolled up in my t-shirt sleeve. (now I roll my own and hide them under the console in my truck).
