  • Orlando Speedworld: Response about Super Late Models

"SLM have a big payout and OSW & NSS don't get more than 11, EVER, except for the Governor's Cup at NSS. Talked with Dick Anderson and Mike Cope, both great racers and former promoters, also Darryl Shelnut. All agree that SLM racing is not good on my coast. With that being said, because there is only so many SLM cars around here, we will not be running any SLM races this season. You can work with any race track, but still don't work. Gonna work on Tour SLM races for next year, but no events gonna be held by us. Thanks for your input."

    :/

So Dad's SLM - and everyone else's - just sit in the garage. Don't know if they can afford to tow anywhere else from Vero Beach.

Is there a track in the state of Florida that even runs SLM any more *as a "weekly" division?

  • #2
Come on bro, if you can't afford to tow another hour, then you don't belong in a top class. Spend just a little more windshield time and you can take your choice of tracks.

No one has run them weekly for many moons.

The way I see it.Tracks and drivers did it to themselfs. With the rulz, motors etc.Two types of latemodels!Do you see two types of MiniStocks? No.Its gonna take a GREAT leader to take Fl.Racing forward.Someone needs to pull the laces up and reel back the dollar stretchers and get back to racing.

I would go for once a month/6 weeks. Like a 50 lapper special. So what is everyone suppose to do with their cars? Is that the same for NSS? Great. I just spent $3000 on new heads/intake and camshaft to upgrade my engine and get ready for next year. Guess that was money pissed away, again! Why don't you work on class sponsors like other tracks do to offset the cost. Time to turn it into a Street Car.

Question... Do any of the tracks down there host "big shows" where you are required to purchase and race on a brand new set of tires that night like they do up here with the Modifieds? Up here, they do a $5000 to win SK Modified race and a $10,000 to win Open Modified race where the majority of the purse money comes from a required tire purchase.

If they don't run those down there they should maybe look into it... It has been quite popular up here the few times a year they do them.

im with boneman on that... dont get me wrong having a track close to home is nice but if a extra hour drive keeps you from racing you might want a new hobby, hell i drive 1.5 hours just to race my kart lol...i think they should run open mods and slm once a month IF they can get a sponsor for decent payout, it seems to work well that way. i dont know many people who can afford to run a slm weekly now n days ...maybe get 5 or 6 cars and if your lucky 2 or 3 of them are any good, nobody wants to see that.jimbo is doing the right thing. find out who wants to be there and build those classes who show support. id much rather see full fields in lower classes weekly.lots of us are not racing due to money.id like to see them bring back 4 cyl. bombers and then have a class for v6 and v8 bombers pay top 3. this alone in the past would bring plenty of cars and would still do the same weekly if it was 100 to win.ive run all kinds of classes and i have more fun in bomber classes than any other and keeps the cost down.i really hope my home track makes it.

              Would it really matter?

Would it really matter what they ran and when? If they ran once a week you guys would bitch it was too expensive to race that often. If they ran once a month you would bitch that wasn't enough, so whats the difference I think all you want to do is bitch not race anyway. When was the last time anyone saw a great slm race anywhere even the big races aren't that swell the Governors Cup may have a good amount of cars but the same few cars are the ones who win every year oh except last year when the northern car I think Bubba Pollard cleaned everyones clock, just admit it you don't really want to race you just want to bitch.

                TCCAZ,

Correct. Those who want to race are racing.

                Phil,

They do make you buy tires and gas down here but only pay $1500 to win.

Citrus runs SLM's every other week, they get between 14-18 cars for their regular 8 lap heat race/35 lap feature programs. The last two FUPS races at Citrus have been a few of the best SLM races I've seen in a long time. I believe Wayne started 10th to win one of them, and Webster started 8th to win the last one, plenty of passing and good battles for the lead till the end. It's not dead everywhere.

There racing was great but the fans didn't come for the event and the track went broke.
Will they ever learn... If the track doesent make a few bucks it wont make it.
All the tracks but 2 have new promoters in florida.

Jimmy NSS is running SLM weekly ????

                      Nerone did it

Don Nerone love him or hate him he made it work. Don how for 30 years or more did you run SLM shows pay the cars and pay the bills?
Let's see no money no cars.
No cars no tires sold no gas sold no pit passes sold.
                      No cars no fans.
Seems also although we all had issues from time to time with him Bert Ashelman ran a ton of SLM stuff with weekly shows and made it work.
All classes of these circle track cars are a lot of work and expensive so some payback is not unreasonable to expect if promoters can use cars to get fans in the stands. Seems to me that is the problem.
                      The money comes and goes.
The trophy we get to keep.

Personally, I don't think this is a bad move. The track was on the verge of extinction and there's a catch-22 with SLM's. If you don't pay a big enough purse you won't get many, but will still have to pay a bigger purse than any other class. If you put up a big purse you are rolling the dice on how many cars will actually show. If they don't show and you cut the purse and you are the devil. If you advertise baseing the purse on the car count, you will get a small field, cut the purse and once again you are the devil. You gotta walk before you can run. The place needs to get back on it's feet with OWM's, Sportsman and Trucks as the weekly headliner for the short term. Once that happens then bring the SLMs in with a guaranteed purse. I think that we are now at the point that the only time you are going to see a good SLM fields is either tour events or stand alone big events (i.e. Governor's Cup, World Series, etc.). I hate to say it but I think the time has come for SLM to no longer be a weekly (or bi-weekly) class where they only draw 5-6 cars. That being said, every other schedule is up, WHERE THE HELL IS THE SCHEDULE FOR SPORTSMAN???

I would have been pleased with once a month for SLM's.

We don't have enough motor or gear for New Smyrna. Scott's (my brother) never ran the joint. Dad's afraid to tear up the car up there with a driver with no experience there, especially racing out of his own pocket.

Rex, I understand what you're sayin'. I *wish* Dad and Scott could run at Auburndale, but I think they don't like the way the place is run. Inverness....ehhh...*maybe*. Being as far south as they are, it's a pretty good tow to *anywhere*, with no tracks south of Auburndale on the east coast/central Florida.

                            It's tough :/
