  • Great Racing at Full Throttle Speedway!

I've got to tell you, if you're a race fan you've got to come out to see the awesome action at Full Throttle Speedway. Made my first trip there to race last night, since the track has changed hands, and I was fully impressed. First off, the racing is great. A lot of tracks in FL claim to be two-groove race tracks and they just simply are not. Well, Full Throttle is a true two-groove track that promotes incredible side-by-side action! Maybe it's the new asphalt in the turns, but the old Desoto was never this racy. The Pro-Truck race was unbelievable with the action up front between Brent Huber, Nick Hernandez and Michael Pilla. Two and three wide action right to the checkered flag. What a race! To their credit, even though they were rubbing pretty good, none of these three took it over the line and put on a clinic as to what good, hard, close racing should be. Even though they were leaning on each other pretty hard, it was all back slaps and hugs when the top three went for interviews on the front stretch. The way racing should be!

Kevin Williams and co. have done a great job refurbishing the track and the evidence was everywhere. New structures, repaving of pit road, all new restaurant facilities, new grandstands and a ton of other improvements too numerous to list. The food was much improved over days past and the Big Daddy Pork Tenderloin sandwich, Cheeseburgers and Funnel Cake got rave reviews from the 07 crew. The bar on the frontstretch is pretty damn cool, too. Sports Bar right inside the track!

From a racers point of view I don't think I could have had a better night (short of performing better and having the car dialed in a little better, but that's on me!). Kevin was busy as all get out, but made time early in the day to come by and introduce himself and personally welcome us to his jewel of a racetrack. In the drivers meeting he made a point of letting everyone know about the transparancy of what the post-race tech process would be. In all my years of racing I have never seen anything like the fair and random process that FTS uses. Racers don't like the ugly aura of favoritism, and Kevin's process goes a long way to making sure that it will never be a legitimate concern at FTS. It was a hot night and a few drivers had issues with dealing with the heat and humidity. FTS had EMS right to these competitors A.S.A.P. and attended to them with great care. It's nice to see a track with an ambulance and speedy EMTs ready to go on-site. Comforting to have that peace of mind when you strap in. As for our race, Aaron Williamson took down the win and we went green to checker! A testament to all the Sportsman drivers running each other with respect at FTS. I have been in some horrible wreckfest races this year and it was a breath of fresh air to run 40 straight green flag laps. But by no means was there no action from my point of view. The race started out with me having a great side by side battle with Mark Peterson. Thanks Mark, for running me clean. I don't think we could have slid a slice of bread between our cars at times, but we never touched. Then I had a little "rubbin' is racin'" duel with Josh Calvert and got by him. Next was a good little clean pass on James Debose. Just when I thought I was all clear here comes Josh Calvert back around me on the high-side. That kid just wouldn't give up! Next I saw Dan Scott getting loose in front of me and thought I had a good chance to get the 5th, but he gathered himself up and I could never get to his bumper. Wish we could have hit the setup a little better, as we were just a tad too loose. But all in all it was a hell of a lot of fun running with some of the best Sportsman drivers FL has to offer and putting the car on the trailer in one piece. I drove the long ride back home to Port Richey with a smile on my face and I'm looking forward to the next time I can make it back to Full Throttle Speedway...

FTS Management thanks you for your support and kind words. as we all know in this sport, 1 negative can over rule 100 positives and we look forward to your next trip to FTS.

Had a ton of fun racing with you last night. Didn't mean to rub the right side of you like I did getting into 1, just flat out didn't realize you were there. I think after that we didn't touch once although we raced close for a few laps. My car wasn't too bad for sitting since May. I just expected atleast one caution and was just a tick too loose at the beginning to really do anything with anyone. Then when the car started to come In I just didnt have enough time to catch anyone else. So, I just pretty much rode around the last 8 or so laps hoping for a caution Lol. Have a couple small things to tune on before the next one to get a little better, but I will be ready and hope to see you back! Josh

That's funny Josh, I thought the contact we made was all my doing! LOL! No harm, no foul. Just good short track racing. Two seconds with a rag and some brake cleaner and all the evidence of that contact (tire mark) will be gone. I have to tell you, I was impressed with the way you drive and the respect you showed on the racetrack, for a younger gentleman. I watched you work your way around the very loose 8 without having to boot him around. I was surprised when I walked down to your trailer to talk to you and saw how young you are! You drive like a veteran. No offense but when an old guy like me races with younger guys I kinda cringe because a lot of 'em will run over you and not think twice about it. The young Sportsman guys at FTS (you and Michael Atwell) are showing the rest of the young 'uns how to get it done. Good job and I'll be looking forward to making it back to duel with you again (hopefully both of our cars will be a little less "free" then!)

Thank you I appreciate that! Well, I'm not as young as a lot of people think, just turned 23 actually. No offense taken, I know what you mean. I've always been the one to pay for everything and put all the money in this car and the others that I've had, so anytime it gets tore up it comes from my pocket. And like most guys in this class, I do not have deep pockets Lol. I do all of my own fab/set up work, and my dad helps from time to time when he has extra time. So it makes it more fun to go run and be as competitive as we are and be as close as we are with the set up. Which means now we can tune on the car and not have to fix it.. Lol

Yikes! Am I embarassed Josh! But to an old dog like me (47) I thought you were younger (trust me one day you'll appreciate looking younger!) . My bad. But you hit the nail on the head. When you have to pay for it all and do all the work yourself you kinda have a concious as to not wanting to tear your stuff up. That's why I love Sportsman, not many "lucky boys" running in our class. But trust me, you're in good company. A few years back I used to run weekly with a guy named Doug Coby and a guy named Woody Pitkat. Although young, they ran with their head and today one is the reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion and the other is the New Smyrna World Series Tour Type Modified Champion. Not bad company to be compared to. Looking forward to the next race I can make at FTS. See you then!
