Billy T. and I were waiting to ride into the pits on the back of the infield tow truck when it happened. Was right at the end of the first 125 lapper. They went extra laps because back then the last ten laps had to be green flag laps.
When the arm came apart it fell down, caught the track and spun him around slapping the wall pretty much at a parallel. Somehow his helmet came out the window and whacked the wall pretty good. I remember it being pretty messed up. You can see me and Billy in the video helping get the car back to the pits with the wrecker crews.
Butch Lindley was one hell of a pilot. Sad to see him go out that way. Reminded me of Jan Opperman.
His boy won a few races in the Hooters Cup series a few years ago. Mardy Lindley. Talked to him a few times at Desoto and Lakeland. They say he is a lot like his dad in mannerisms.
