  • Slicks at Full Throttle Speedway

It's been rumored that the Modifieds at Full Throttle Speedway will soon be going to the Hoosier F53 slick tire. My question is: are the Late Model Sportsman cars going to this tire also (like Showtime has done with Mods and Sportsman)? IMHO, I think this would be a great move. I have raced on F53's on a Sportsman-type car and they worked real well. They have superior grip and stability over the "airplane tire" (Hoosier 650/450) that we currently run while lasting a little bit longer. I am contemplating making Full Throttle (old Desoto) my "home track" again in 2014 and if they decided to go to the F53, it would probably seal the deal for me. Anybody know? Linda? Anyone???

Thanks Linda for the quick reply! Let me know if you hear anything. I'll probably be down to compete in the LMS 40 on 8/31. I'll ask then. It would make sense from a Promoter's point of view to put at least 2 divisions on the tire. O.K., I'm gonna start trouble. Full Throttle LMS driver's, do you want the airplane tires or the slicks????

When they were on slicks, everybody wanted grooved tires to save money. They will last longer so we will save money. Now it is the slicks will last longer. Why not ask for solid rubber tires, they will last longer. Grow a set, and set up your car to run on the shocks and springs. The grooved tires show who is a real driver and not just a steering wheel holder.

The way I heard it, the tracks and tire suppliers wanted treaded tires because they could make more profit than they could selling slicks.

Truth is, a good driver in a good car is going to win on treaded tires or slicks. The guys who can't always think the playing field needs to be leveled.

Even if all tracks go to slicks there are guys that will still buy new tires every week. That's just how it goes, the promoters can't make everyone happy no matter what decision is made. It's a damn if you or damn if you don't situation...jmo

I said I was gonna start trouble! And "53", I think I know where you're going with this. I have raced on ALL of the treaded tires. The latest ones (Hoosier 650s/450s) have decent grip but wear out real quick. If you do not bolt on at least 2 new right sides every race on a Sportsman you will not be competitive. They fall off so fast that even after just time trialing you will lose 2-3 tenths (yes, even those cars that are dialed in). I would imagine with a Mod you would need 4 every night with the extra HP. The slicks (Hoosier F53) came back into the picture recently when the Mod drivers pleaded for them at Showtime. Not sure who made the call at NSS and OSW. Yoho went as far as to put the Sportsman and Trucks on the F53 at Showtime. From what I hear from the Mod drivers, they like the slick better because of the better grip AND they can get 2 races out of them in a lot of cases. The 53 is actually a HARDER compound than the 650/450 tires. On the positive side the Hoosier grooved tires have seemed to level the field (and tip the scales in some cases) between the Crate and Open motors in the Sportsman class. Another positive was (until the move back toward slicks) that ALL tracks in Florida had Sportsman, OWMs and Trucks on the same tires. I myself run the Crate, so if the F53 would give the bigger HP motors an advantage, like AMF suggests it would, then it probably wouldn't be the right decision for Sportsman. Does anyone know how much quicker the 53's are than the 650/450s on the clock with the Mods? The problem is that we are getting fragmented again, in all three classes, as to what tire is being run where and on what. Ultimately the promoter's will decide what happens here, not us racers. If it was up to me I would have Sportsman race on Hoosier Commanches on the right and Street T.D.s on the left. These tires aren't grooved, they're treaded and hard as a rock! The great thing about these tires are that they WILL last 3 full races and are actually faster the second week than the first. They also put handling at a premium and make you do your homework. You can let the Richie Rich's buy all the tires they want and it won't matter. This would be great but we don't race at Fantasyland and there's no way the tracks are gonna let us have a tire that lasts this long. That's why I inquired about the F53s. They're a little cheaper and last a little longer so it might be worth a look as long as they don't let the big motor cars blow us Crates into the weeds. FTS has said they are going to try and align with Showtime with rules so this question seemed plausible. Good Year made a good grooved tire that lasted a couple of races but they don't make short track tires anymore. The American Racer grooved tire is worse than the Hoosier, IMO. One thing is for sure. With the current state of things we NEED every track running the same tire for at least each division. The cars need to be spread around to keep car counts and the tracks healthy. Running different tires everywhere just keeps cars more isolated. My trailer is in my yard and right now I could go to any track in the state (except Showtime) with the tires on my car and the quick change gears I have. I have heard that American Racer is trying to make headway here again and almost had the FUPS tracks in their pocket this year. Ultimately I don't care what were on as long as it will last 2 races, keeps my Crate competitive and every track in the state runs it.

#1 The driver didn't have a voice in this(at least at NSS & OSW. And in the middle of the season too!). Let the racer have some input.
#2 That was the reason is because they would last longer than slicks. They don't. Think about it. Why would you sell tires that last longer if you were the tire guy? Now you have cut your salary.
#3 Yes there are some teams that will buy new tires all the time and they will continue too.
#4 They changed from all 4 being 650's to letting the 450's be run on the lefts because of guys complaining about traction.
#5 AMF, So you can make anything hook up on "Airplane" tires with horsepower (got the H.P. part covered)? I challenge you to get mine to hook up then. Oh but wait. IT's one of those Joe Harris cars that has everything wrong with it like you said one time about Shain's car. Probably the cars fault.
#6 Airplane tires are for airplanes and that's where they belong. Slicks are for Race Cars.

Lets put the SLM's on them too(APT's) and see how that goes!

There were a lot of people that did not want APT's so don't say that everyone wanted them. I sure the hell didn't!

15 inch slicks would be cool. Then let us run the same chassis like they do up north. Turn all the Fl. type mods we have now into e-mods and let the open mods be like the northern ones. Then the fans will see a difference.

of the matter is that three years ago or so at citrus county 1 driver tested these tires ( Robbie cooper ). Although it slowed our cars by half a second the selling point was that they would last longer. They claimed we would get 3 to 4 races without the tire dropping off. Well I can personally tell you that for me and im not the greatest driver and my teammates that you lose 3 tenths after you first run them. Another thing was that some of the other gentlemen that you race with became lethal weapons behind the steering wheel. These tires do not have any forgiveness. once you overheat them you are toast. Then came the 450 lefts which did make a difference but not enough. I found that I was losing left side tires faster than the rights. So now you have dedicated left and right tires which in turn makes tire management much more difficult. There are some that got quick but only a few and some of them had to de-tune there motor with a cam or restrictors. And I agree with AMF about the chassis set up but you will just have to adapt to the slicks like you did with the treaded. I been watching your cars and they are bad fast. The F-53's at Showtime give you more forgiveness and they are all the same tire. I have been able to honestly get 2 races from them. As far as showing who is a (real driver) well the cream will always rise to the top. And when it comes to bal%# haven't met too many mod drivers that didn't have a big set.

There will only be 1 choice for a driver. Chad Pierce! I'll be back in Florida next month.
