  • The Truth...

Copied this info from a daily racing newsletter I receive:

"TNT continues to struggle to gain viewership during its six-race stint covering NASCAR. Sunday’s Sonoma event suffered double-digit declines, down 9% in the Nielsens to a 3.0 after last year’s 3.3 rating. Viewership also decreased 10% to 4.7 million despite being the most-watched race yet since the network took over the schedule in early June. How far have things fallen? By comparison, the Sonoma race four years ago had a total audience of just under 5.8 million".

"Another bleak statistic is Sunday’s 4.7 million in viewership, a season high for the network is still 1 million less than any FOX-covered race on television this season. Only the All-Star Race, put on SPEED channel, had less people watching a Sprint Cup event in 2013. So far this season, TNT has seen double-digit declines in each of the three Cup races they have covered, been criticized for some on-air glitches and has announced the loss of their popular “Wide Open” coverage, once a yearly staple that will change the way the July 4th weekend Daytona event gets broadcast this year".

OK... want to know why ratings are down? Just look at myself for the big answer... I could not watch the race on Sunday because IT WAS ON CABLE and I don't have (nor want) cable or a dish. When the races were on FOX, I could watch every week, but now it's impossible unless I'm at some restaurant etc. that has sports on TV.

Since going digital, I get, with just an antenna, about 35 channels of which I watch 12-14 regularly... I don't watch much TV anyway, so cable is an unnecessary expense for me... hence, I can't watch any NASCAR races right now except a few Nationwide events that are on ABC - But, I just live with that and now that 740 AM in Orlando is carrying MRN/PRN (at least until football season) I can listen to their coverage...

I'm sure, in the current economy, many people have either dropped cable and gone back to an antenna (I have several friends who have done so) or have been cut off for lack of payment... So, NASCAR needs to realize that if they want ratings to go back up or at least stabilize, they have to have their events on a network people can watch for free... Heck, if you have cable or a dish, you still have to put up with the commercials!

Oh well, at least nascar.com has the "race rewind" on their site by Monday morning... You can watch everything that happened in the race in about 15 minutes...

The question is, are tv ratings the most important thing, or is a giant check every year from tv networks the most important. If you're NASCAR/ISC and getting a check from say TNT for 10 million a year, isn't that more important than losing a million people for 6 races? Those million people you lost are viewers, not fans spending money at your track. So have you really lost more than you've gained?
There have been racing series over the years that were happy to hand out free tickets to anyone who wanted them. It put people in the stands for the tv cameras to pick up, but the race was already pure gravy thanks to sponsor and tv rights money.
