  • Battle at the Beach

So with all the DIS reconstruction talk - has anyone heard anything about the Battle being relocated to NSS next year? It seems like such a logical fit - ties in perfectly with a revamped NSS speedweeks, which unfortunately has been needed as well.

I am sure nothing can be announced - but can it even be hinted at?

Since I gave up my driving career, i just sit around and wonder about these types of things.

Does NASCAR do anything or any race association in Fl. based on logic.

It could be run at any Florida short track, and should have been. But from a promotional standpoint, there are only really 2 viable locations, NSS and OSW. The Battle on The Track Apron was timed to bring in the Speedweeks crowd, and both NSS and OSW are close enough to bring in some of that crowd. But I have a feeling the necessary outlay of cash to get that race away from the Speedway and placed at NSS or OSW would be pretty sizeable.

The Battle, in my opinion, is only in place as another revenue source for the Speedway. They don't want a single dollar that could've been spent at Daytona, spent anywhere else. I don't see them in any way, shape or form, sending potential dollars over to New Smyrna.

While I tend to agree with the notion about it only being about the speedway and income, I think there is a "chance" they look to strengthen a local NASCAR affiliate. Especially given the abysmal results they (DIS) achieved on their own. There is still plenty of $$ opportunity for NASCAR if they get it televised at NSS.

A guy can dream cant he?

I could be wrong, but I think the whole appeal of why cars showed up is that A) it was at DIS so people could say they raced there, during speedweeks, which is a big deal to most people, and B) It was televised.

I guess if you could televise the same races at NSS it would work, I mean as far as getting the cars to show. However I don't think there would be as many as the original even though it was a sh!t show simply because its not at Daytona. I can prove it by this one sentence...look how many modfieds came over to NSS after the battle at the beach, hardly any. The big appeal was racing at Daytona and being on TV. Maybe if NASCAR got behind NSS and supported it the way they did at the battle it would work.

Personally I will probably race wherever they have it this year, I am from the Northeast originally and have a lot of family and friends that have never seen me race so I think it would be awesome for them to see it on TV. That being said I would much rather see it at NSS for the better racing. If they had it at NSS they would have to NASCAR the sh!t out of the place, and make it a points race for the Whelen Mod Tour so they all show.

And I agree that speedweeks at NSS needs some serious changes, along with a lot of other things there but that's a whole different story that's been beaten to death, I think we all know the problem there...someone needs to buy it, and it will never happen. Sad because I consider it my home track.

I don't see the NASCAR people supporting anything they don't completely control. I don't really see any evidence of NASCAR participation at NSS, or OSW for that matter, just the logo on NSS web site.
I was very surprised that the majority of cars and drivers that ran the Battle on The Apron never showed up to race at NSS. And several who did only raced a night or two and then left. We'll probably never really know the reason why, but for racers to tow all the way to Florida, run the Apron, and then tow all the way back home again while ignoring the traditional Speedweeks event at NSS, suggests there's not much love left for NSS among the Tour mods.

I think the three points mentioned above were the contributing factors in participation (in addition to NASCAR pushing it hard) - TV, DIS prestige and $20k to win.

A show could be crafted at NSS that could accomplish two of those with NASCARs help - the question is will they? And perhaps why should they?

IMHO, nine nights for the high $$$ classes is all but dead for speedweeks. If they put together smaller programs (3-4 days) with bigger purses for each headlining series and then make a solid undercard (PLMs and Mods) for the week it could work (see VSP).

I just really want to see it succeed and will be there regardless.

Oh, I agree there was a stark difference in prize money. But why drive all that distance for only one show and ignore the 9 nights just a few miles down the road? I don't remember what the mod pay-out was at NSS during Speedweeks, but it was a chance to race for some more money, help cover the cost of the trip. Most of those guys had raced every year at NSS until this year. And NSS was even NASCAR sanctioned.
Someone, or something changed at NSS, and the racers didn't want anything to do with it.

You don't suppose it was because there weren't enough injectors at NSS do you? By the way, at the end of the night, they're called front and back ejectors.

it's pretty simple at nss they are paying the same purse that they paid us back in 1976 now back then clyde would help us out a little but I could bring the hauler down from wisconson for 150.00 can't do that no more. I know it takes money to run the track but perhaps if the mangement would make use of some of the local colleges marketing students on a intern commision bases maybe they could get some national sponsership to come on board and get the purses up to help the racer to meet his expenses just sayen woody
