  • An Old Race Car Lives Again

This is pretty cool... I work with a lot of guys who are either restoring or building replicas of former race cars, everything from NASCAR to Indy Cars to Sports Cars... We help them with race information and photos to document the history of what they found or are building from the ground up....

This car was built by Holman-Moody in early 1964 - #C4HM-10041 - It was driven on the NASCAR Grand National circuit by Skip Hudson at Riverside, Bobby Marshman at Daytona, Augie Pabst in a 250 km stock car race at Sebring (he won) and then was wrecked at Atlanta by Larry Frank. The car was re-built and sent to run on the USAC circuit the rest of the year... It was driven by Whitey Gerken and Bill Lutz.

After the '64 season, Holman-Moody sold the car to Jabe Thomas who drove it all year although he loaned it to Ned Jarrett for a race so Ned could earn points on his way to his second NASCAR championship. He also had 'Lil Bud Moore in the car for a race.

Thomas drove the car again in 1966, wrecked it and after that it was re-built and driven in a few races by Doug Cooper and Buddy Baker before being retired.

Recently the car was discovered sitting out in the woods behind a house (not sure where) and it was purchased by John Craft who now has it about 75% restored... He's still up in the air as to whether the car will look like it did when Marshman drove it at Daytona or Frank drove it at Atlanta...

    The photos:
    1) This is just after Frank hit the rail at Atlanta in 1964...
    2) Jabe Thomas in 1965 - car was painted black & gold in honor of Smokey Yunick...
    3) Jabe Thomas in action in 1966 (car was white & blue) racing Bobby Allison..
    4) This is what was left of it when found in 2012...
    5) And here's what it looks like as of a few days ago...

The nice thing about Holman-Moody cars were the fact they had an ID plate to identify each car they built... If the second or third, or fourth owner did not remove the plate, it's very easy to trace the history of the car (like this one)

That took a lot of work! A true labor of love. What a great job John.

Going by the cars color in the photo of Frank hitting the wall and the other photo of the restored car, it looks like he's made up his mind to keep it as Larry Frank's car.
I have all the respect and admiration in the world for people who save old race cars. I'd like to see a photo of the finished, lettered car when he's done.

            Agree that looks beautiful!

The pic that shows how they found it with a tree growing up through the engine compartment - that thing had been there a while.
