  • Midgets at NSS....?

How was the show? I didn't get there last night, but hoping for tonight.

    Any comments...?

    Midgets?

The midget field was a little short.
The competition didn't quite rise to the level that was hoped for.
The show was dwarfed by the sprint cars from last year.

Frass, you may wonder how I know all this when I was sitting at Ocala with you last night.

Midgets - Only 18/19 midgets on hand. 2 scrambles (heats) 12 laps each. First heat won by Santos #17 in 3 min 28 seconds. Second heat #7 Armstrong in 3 minutes 31 seconds. Super fast cars. Main event Kyle Larson. Show was fine if you are a midget fan. I followed them quite a bit back in the day up North at Seekonk, Thompson, Stafford, Plainville, Oxford, and my all-time favorite Westboro. Would rate this show right up there with those I just mentioned. Hard to see their numbers at NSS and announcing didn't quite get me familiar with who was who. Names there were Steele, Hines, Larson, Armstrong and another Armstrong. Swanson, Hamilton, and others which I can't seem to remember at this point. They did warm up the night. Good enough for me where I will bypass Daytona tonight and head back to NSS. Once again they are Fast!!! I enjoyed the entire show. Over with by 10:30 as well.

They only have 15 tonight... A far cry from the 26 "supposedly" entered...

Seen the show Sunday and it was outstanding! The feature was good, but not great. Both heat races wear great and took just over 7 mins for both of them combined. Watching the drivers wheel it in the corner was worth the price of admission, specially in the feature when there was fluid on the track in turn 4. One of the owners told me that some of the teams were snowed in and others stayed to plow since that's how a lot of them make their $$$.

Last night was our first night there at NSS and i'm glad we went. The car count was NOT as advertised, not only for the midgets but for all of the classes. I downloaded the Pre-Entry list from the NSS site before we went over there. Waste of time because only about 50% of the Pre-Entries were in attendance. Have to say that the racing was very good in all the classes, and a minimum of cautions.
The only negative things about the show ( other than the frigid weather ) were the high ticket prices and the appearance of the NSS operation. They trotted out the track vehicles for the National Anthem and it looked very sad. An ambulance that was badly faded and old enough to be called an historic. A fire truck that was just as old and sad looking. And the VW buggy i remember from years past was so dirty it looked like it hadn't been washed in years. Along with the hand lettered New Smyrna Speedway signs on the pit wall and around the track, overall it didn't make a very good case for NSS being a serious race track.
Modern track equipment costs money i realize, but come on guys. Any sign painter could paint over those signs on the walls that look like young kids lettered them for a reasonable price i'm sure. And washing the buggy costs nothing.

Many of the Pre-entered teams never had any intention of running the entire week. As of Wednesday, you'll see the car counts start to grow to the levels advertised.
