They had a full house at BRP for the finale of the World of Outlaws LM. It was $20,000 to win, but the big crowd at $40 a head more than covered that!
I took my sons because they were supposed to start at 3 or 4, and I could get them home without freezing them. Even with an extra hour of driving, I figured I'd get home a few hours earlier than if we went to Volusia.
But instead, on the coldest day of the year, the start was moved back to 6 pm. Maybe that came from the Outlaws, who knows. So we settled in and still had a good time. My boys love dirt, Frasson wandered over, and I finally got to meet "Benny the Mule", who was on a racing vacation from NC, back to his old stomin' grounds.
I was really impressed with the WoO LM announcer. He knew everyone who walked by. He knew about everyone too. He interacted with the fans, either adults or kids, and was damn funny. Florida has lots of announcers that I enjoy hearing, but there is a reason this guy tours with the pros.
BRP has proven themselves capable of smoothly hosting big events. The Outlaws did their part and showed up with 39 top shelf teams from around the country. Everything was in place for a great show, but it didn't quite happen.
The surface didn't cooperate and by feature time everyone turned into a bottom feeder. Lots of cars tried the outside; although it would work ok through 1 and 2, but they would lose 2-3 car lengths in turns 3 and 4. Even worse, a bunch of big holes appeared in #4, so everyone just bounced through and held on.
There was a big berm at the top of the track after qualifying. Before the heats, a grader came out and knocked it down. I think that was the problem. After the cushion was taken away, everyone stayed on the bottom and had a hard time passing.
An odd note of trivia: cars with number "1" on the side finished first, second, third, fifth and I think sixth! Only Rick Eckerts #24 broke it up!
I stopped at Volusia on the way home: the sprints were on the track for the feature, so I would have saved 2 hours of driving, seen a better show and still got home at the same time. Oh well. Off to NSS tonight!
