  • WOO at the Dome?

I know it was a few years back....didn't someone try and race the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars at the St. Pete Stadium where the Rays play? I'm assuming it was not successful because has not happened again? When and why not?

Can't remember the year, but I was there for the first of 2 nights. Karts, Mini Sprints, TBARA 360's and WoO 410's.

It was a debacle right off, when either 6 or 8 NASCAR guys were flown over from Daytona for a special match race between them. They showed up, but the check didn't. They refused to run.

The show itself was pretty good, but I found out later, the Promoter, Paul Morgan, took several months, if not years to pay everyone from night 1. Nobody ever got a dime for night 2.

That was the end of the World of Outlaws at the (then) Suncoast Dome.

        Wow. Good info.

The link shows good pics, appears to be a fairly well constructed track and decent crowd. I guess it made no money as promoter had none to pay. A shame but actually good concept, too bad it did not work.

              Mini stock race at intermission

A friend of mine from East Bay loaned his mini out to race in an
exhibition race between all the local sportscasters. Andy Hardy , Skip Carter and the others.

I worked the track entrance my x wife linda rick day with danell coller scored the event. Dick wesfall was flaging and Roby Helm on the mike. I left out lots of good people that worked the event.
none of us got paid and didnt care. We were just happy to be part of the great event. The WOO took all the gate money for them and left..

Felt sorry for the promoter for what happened.
It was a great show and i got to have Cooks personal carr towed and that was worth the whole thing...
                Roby is still laughing..

                  Sprints at the Dome

I remember the worst part of this event, you couldn't breath. They had the worst ventilation for an indoor event.

There were 4 NASCAR drivers, K. Petty, M. Waldrip, Schrader, and another, (I can't remember) other that were to drive the TBARA 360 cars in an exhibition and it's true, they came and went without driving.
The payoff was excruiatingly late and slow the first night...night #2, the drivers were stiffed.
Promoter was Paul Morgan of Tampa...prior to that event a somewhat respected WoO car owner.

My undersdtanding is that the WoO drivers were paid at a later date via check...TBARA guys were screwed.

How in the hell do the "World of Outlaws take all the money" when Paul Morgan is the one who collected it...???

Don.... thats like saying to the Street Stock and Mini Stock drivers that they can't get paid because the Super Late guys took all the money. The track collects the money, and it gets HANDED out from there, not TAKEN by anyone else. The Outlaw drivers did NOT get paid that first night, but eventually got their money from night 1, several months later. Everyone else got screwed for every other race & division that ran those 2 nights.

You are feeling sorry for the wrong guy. He may have been nice, but he stiffed everyone, and put the blame on the same guys he screwed.
