  • Thursday at Bubba's!

67 dirt late models on a week night, whats not to love? I made it to night #3 of the NeSmith LM's, and I'm amazed that more race fans didn't do the same thing. There were 10 prelims and an outstanding 40 lap feature. The only disappointment was in the fan count! Ok, so we could list excuses: it was chilly, it was a Thursday night, who knows what else. The show deserved much better support, IMHO.

What a mix of drivers! NASCAR's Joey Coutler, Hall of Famer Ronnie Johnson, second generation Ivedent Lloyd Jr, Florida star Kyle Bronson and even an outstanding 11 year old driver, Michael Lake.

Yep, 11 years old. Too young in my opinion, but the fact is this young man can wheel a car. I would think a story like that would be exploited to the fullest: he should be on the local news and in the local paper. Imagine if every family in the area knew he was running...he could draw in some fans.

There is a lot to like about crate LMs. They wore each other out in dense traffic all night, and yet I didn't see a single one over-heat or blow up. Those guys have to be spending less on engines, fuel and maybe even tires. They may still be going broke, but they are doing it at a slower rate.

And what a main event! I think they started 28, and I guarantee that no lap looked like any other. Every trip around they were pushing, grinding, sliding from the bottom to the top and back. Passing and repassing until the door and fenders flapped. Lots of action and even some bad temper mixed in. I know those drivers had a blast.

$12 to get in, and 3 hours later I was on my way home!

Rex, we are going over tonight! Think we are going to NSS on the 17th to check out the USAC cars...

"They may still be going broke, but they are doing it at a slower rate."

That is the racing quote of the century!

I'm surprised by the slim crowds at BRP. Maybe a few too many dirt races scheduled thoughout Florida during Speedweeks?

I wonder if the schedule change of the Super Bowl has something to do with it. People just may be postponing their vacations a week this year. In addition, you just can't expect the local working family to come out on weeknights. Maybe one of two but all things being equal, they'll wait for the weekend show. Cold weather doesn't help either.

I went last night and the show was running great and then it happened..... They, (Bubba?) decided to wet a dry slick track and grade it. That took 30 minutes and then another 40 minutes to run a thunderstock feature with 9 cars for 20 laps. Then almost an hour and many tore crate late models later it was over. Not the smartest move IMO given the cold weather and the track wasn't bad... I was going back tonight but the late show last night killed that.

East Bay last night was also empty, couple hundred people tops. I really think there are just so many races that people have to carefully choose how to spend their money. Tickets for the Lucas and WoO races are pricey, and I think people would rather see a couple of those shows than the lower tier series. Your average weekly fan probably spends 25, 30 bucks for a ticket and some grub. But they want to hit a handful of Lucas/WoO/Usac shows they're into 50 bucks + per night.

That's a shame, a dry slick track has the potential to create 3 grooves and some great racing.
Normalcy is a myth. what is perfectly normal for the Cheetah, Becomes absolute chaos for the Antelope.

Your right, i have limited time and funds for speedweek and have selected the best week to come down. MANY i'm sure think the same way.

Thats what I thought... not to mention it added about 2 hrs to the show....when it was cold and the crowd was sparse. Lots of people left before they were done with the track prep.
