I know in '85, the Governor's Cup was awarded at St. Pete. They ran a 50-lapper at Bradenton on Friday night; the 200 at Sunshine on Saturday night; then the Coca Cola 200 back at DeSoto on Sunday afternoon. For some reason, I can't recall '86 or '87, unless those are the races you're referring to, Don. At the time, at least in '86, we were still running regularly at Sunshine with the "outlaw" style Late Models, and if the Cup *was* a NASCAR AACS race, then we wouldn't have run it. In '87, we were running All-Pro with Donnie Strickland's team, and wouldn't have run a NASCAR AACS event. So I don't think we attended either year.
*EDIT* - yep, looks like the Triple Crown weekend *was* indeed a NASCAR AACS points weekend: 1987 NASCAR All-American Challenge Series (Google is your friend
). Thanks, Don, for makin' me look it up...LOL...*BUT*....this says that in '87, Butch Miller won on Friday and Sunday at Bradenton, and Trickle won Saturday at St. Pete. In '86, Ronnie Sanders won at Orlando Friday night; Miller on Saturday at Sunshine; and Trickle on Sunday at Bradenton on Sunday afternoon. So, if Cope won the Governor's Cup both years...at what track, and *was it* a "NASCAR" race?
The reason I had asked if the NASCAR thing would affect the Cup, was because...well...I wasn't sure if the rest of the state's (Super) Late Model drivers would make the trip, or drivers from the rest of the country, if it *was* a "NASCAR-sacnctioned" race. I guess we'll find out in November, huh?
