Ok speedway owners, how about starting off your new season by examining your tracks fire fighting ability? It is a fundamental responsibility, but I think it is sometimes over-looked or taken for granted.
Last week at New Smyrna, the engine on a lead car erupted in flames. The driver is an experienced veteran, so he drove the length of the straightaway on fire, and then parked next to the safey buggy and a wrecker. In my opinion, it took way too long to put that fire out. It looked like the buggy driver had a hard time getting the extinguisher off the buggy; it would be useful to see a replay.
Is it possible that the safety guy saw the fire was under the hood and took it a little too easy? How do I know, but I suggest that no track fire fighter should make an assumption like that. How does he/she know that it not in the drivers compartment? I would want my fire fighters going full speed to get the job done.
I wasn't at Showtime last week, but another KARNAC poster had a similar concern about a fire at that track.
I'm not throwing stones at anyone or at any track, just offering a reminder that it would be time well spent to review procedures, inspect equipment and do some follow-up training at all tracks.
Hoping for an exciting and safe 2013.
