  • Very long but very interesting! Fact or Fiction?

This message is in regard to the many rumors attached to Punta Gorda Speedway!

I try to stay in the background concerning the track because I trust in Kevin and Terry. So far they have given us a race track we can be very proud of. The place is immaculate clean and well kept. The staff works hard, and racing has been great. Fan count and car count awesome.

The track provides income to many area businesses and entertainment for thousands. It provides a place for people to enjoy this exciting sport, drivers and fans alike...

So ..... do we want to keep it? Well if we do then I think we need to do all we can to support the track and to stand by Kevin and Terry. God knows they have given more than their share. They have spent many many thousands of dollars improving the track and paying off bills dumped in their lap. The money they spent has been coming from their own pockets ...Whether we race or not, bills have to be paid.

Oh, and that's another thing... rumor says that another track owner is telling people Kevin changed tires because he hasn't paid Goodyear! That is plain gossip & just another way to try to discredit an honest hard working businessman named KEVIN WILLIAMS!... He HAD to change to Hoosier and left Goodyear in good standing. Goodyear isn't selling race tires to short tracks anymore. If you want the truth CALL.. dont fabricate lies! You know who you are and so do we... Take care of your own business... it isn't doing that well

I have heard so many rumors about our track and most of them are not true! As you all know we do not own the property the track sits on. It belongs to the airport across the street. Kevin pays a handsome fee every month to lease the track. When he first got the track it was in total disrepair and the concession a place where rats gathered and bred proficiently. Kevin had it gutted and completely rebuilt it. Every week it is scrubbed and sanitized. I can't get into all the work that's been done. Too much!

As soon as the ink was dry they built a highway that runs directly through the track parking lot taking up hundreds of parking spaces ...
What is left is a mud bog when it rains. The ground is low and stays saturated. We have lost thousands of dollars in revenue, staff and owners have lost income, and fans have been disappointed.

Our biggest problem now is a parking lot that holds water and prevents fans from being able to safely park. The land belongs to the airport authority so I believe the airport should provide us with that space . I guarantee if they take over, they will fix the problem. Well as landlords they should legally and morally help Kevin NOW! You people have enough to do keeping the airport running smoothly and efficiently! You trusted Kevin to use your property as an income and entertainment facility and he came thru with flying colors. So now that he put all his money and labor into the place you won't offer any help??? You own this property and you collect money for it. So it is your responsibility to make sure we can collect revenue thru our fans and drivers. The only way we can do that is to give them parking places where they and their vehicles are safe!

So far I haven't seen anyone try to do anything positive to help. We all, including me, sit around and complain, but do little. My suggestion has always been to gather as many people as possible and go to an airport meeting and support Kevin & Terry. People who can politely and sensibly convince the airport of the value the track provides the area. It will do no good to cuss or threaten... we need to unite as there is more power in unity! We need to write letters and also get the media involved. Remember, there is an election coming up in November where there are seats up for grabs!

I've heard the airport wants to take over the track. BIG MISTAKE! One of "their" ideas is to keep the track open for all kinds of entertainment. Ask Bobby , Danny Yates and Kevin how that went. Ask LeRoy how many people showed up for "Marshall Tucker Band".. Under 50! He said he lost his shirt. None of the events that were non racing related were successful and the owners lost their shirts! S o that idea isn't a real good one. And what really ticks me off is they waited until Kevin and Terry built PGS up to the standard it now holds. It is beautiful, it is successful, and the airport did NOT do that. Kevin and Terry Williams, and their staff, along with the drivers and, you the fans, did that! So lets get united in an effort to fix the parking problem that the airport authority has created with the new road to nowhere!.
Call me at 941-629-7451 and I will try my best help us become organized. Any volunteers?

Thank you so much for your time.

I do hope something can be done about the parking,I drive over from Miami to see the races two to three times a year, and always enjoy them a lot, super high five to KEVIN WILLIAMS and the staff for making it a great place to come. I race there my self many times years back, but retired now to being a fan.

        a few questions

        1. why wont the airport give them more room for parking?

        2. why wont the airport fix the dranage problems?

        3. why do you think the airport wants to take over the track, and if they did, where would the people park??

All i heard was how great it was down there and now its not.
When any promoter finds out how much of his money he will have to toss down the drain to keep everyone happy one of two things happen he stops dooing it or has to stop dooing it.
All tracks in florida will go threw the rise and fall of fame. This track has seen a lot of it in the past .
Sorry Oz if i dont feel sorry for any of them. In every case the promoter raises his hand and says ..watch this ..Doesent ask for help or info .They all know it all . Then when things are bad they find themself in a small boat buy them self..

          Been there and done that

            Donaldo!

Kevin NEVER complained about spending money. The track was doomed and he saved it and for no personal monetary gain. He did it to save it!. He saved it for the fans, the drivers, and the community. Kevin was a racer at our track for many yrs. He is a successful business man in the cable business. The airport doesnt give a darned if he loses it. in fact i think thats what their goal is!
The ONLY problem PGS has is parking. The area they gave us is a swamp! if you own a house and rent it out and the septic system fails YOU fix it. Not the tenant...
Don, i wish you had come to our track.. maybe you still will... he has done wonders and the racing is GREAT. he pays the most and charges the least. BUT we have to race to pay the airport their lease $$$$. we dont have a problem with that but we have to provide parking! Its really that simple.

              Well said Carol!

Don go fishing! It is You guys who live in Charlotte county that should be up in arms. I would be glad to go in front of the board but I'd have bo standing being a resident of Manatee county. Doesn't Kevin have a contract with the airport?

What can he do? Take them to court? That just guarantees lots of legal bills, extra hassle, more delays and an even more hostile environment. Stop paying on the lease until improvements are made? Maybe.

Is there a lot nearby? Shuttle the customers with a school bus; I've seen other tracks do this

Dig a ditch to channel the water or build a retention pond. If the parking was dry before the road was built, whoever built the road needs to fix the drainage. There are government agencys or districts that regulate drainage. Its ez to call them but it sounds to me like all the info has not been made public.

I expect there are plenty of government agencies standing in the way of this, especially in light of the tire burying that went on a few years ago. They are probably under the microscope.

Burying tires will definitely gather the attention of the authorities. There's more to this story. Did Kevin shoot himself in the foot by burying tires ? Haha, realized what I said after I wrote it. There is a missing piece of this puzzle. Please let us know when you find it Carol.

rex, man----outsider i am, as usual------i don't get the connection from tire buying, over to ditch digging/drainage issues.

i thought there was a big pond outside of the raceway, from where the drainage/runoff could occur. way outside of the turn 2. no? i could be wrong on this pond, but all water can be drained with a french drain anywhere, from time to time.

                        maybe not.

drop a ditch-digging boom, and haul ass over to the lowest spot/pond, and drop in some 4inch drain pipe over to it. problem solved.

Kevin wasn't the one burying tires.......it was the two people that leased the track before him......he was the one who paid for them to be removed legally......

Why did he pay for something that was done before he leased the track ? Sounds like the property owner would be responsible for the environmental clean-up or the previous lease holder.

Whatever the deal is with the drainage, it sounds like it can be fixed.

Urezz , I am sure you can read between the lines .... It was probably in the negotiations for the lease .....I am only guessing why someone would spend their money to clean up someone else's mess....... Again just my opinion
