  • what ever happened to the S. FL Super Modifieds?

It was before my time, but I understand that super modifieds ran at Hialeah, Hollywood and Palm Beach on a weekly basis in the '60's. I am not talking about the years when we would get a winter time visit from the northern cars. This was a local class that ran across south Florida, and maybe other Florida tracks too. They have been gone a looong time.

Where did they go? Did they price themselves into extinction? Were there competiting groups that split the fields? Did they evolve into something else? (into FAST mini cups for example? ha ha)

So what was the deal? They looked like the headline class 40 years ago. Is there anything to be learned and applied to todays situation?

You can check with Marty Little, but I believe Hollywood Speedway dropped the class after a driver was killed there in one... By the mid 60's, the class had pretty much priced itself out of existence both in S. FL and in the Tampa area (Golden Gate ran them on Sat. nights early on) and a lot of guys were swapping to less expensive Sportsman cars and the late Models were becoming the more popular class among the fans... A lot of the cars stayed around and guys like Wayne Reutimann, Bill Roynon and the Riddle Bros. would run special shows against a host of drivers from N. FL, GA and AL where the cars were still popular... They later evolved into the "Skeeter" mods of the late '60s thru the early '80s... Some of those old cars are still around in the DAARA... Just after New Smyrna was paved in 1967, they ran an open-comp Supermod race which was won by Ellis Palasini... Everybody was there that day who was a name at the time... Herman Wise, Ival Cooper, Wayne Neidecken, Sr., Armond Holley and a bunch more...
Here are some pics from that race... 100 laps won by Palasini in the #V-8...
