  • Desoto Dirt?

I heard from 2 sources today that John was going to put dirt on the high banks of Desoto. Now you talking about a fast Dirt track. A couple of us said at Alabama that it looked kinda like a dirt Desoto. Has anyone else heard abut it? Bob............

I have never been down there nor have I heard that rumor. But from what I have read about him, it doesn't matter if it's dirt or asphalt, It will fail !!!!!!!

I have had my differences with John but he runs a good show. He just isn't a people person. If he would get someone to run it for him and let them do the job, that place would be a gold mine. Its the best weekly race track in Florida all around. It has a lot of seating, all the facilitys are in good shape, plenty of parking. The only down side is the entry and exit from the track. There is one 10' road in and out. When there is a big show it takes forever to get out of there. But when the racings good thats a small price to pay. Bob......

A dirt track that size has the real possibility of being just like an asphalt race track. Follow the leader racing with little going on through the field. If it is done they need to change the payout a little for better racing. Look at most dirt tracks and the corners are all different from each other, that is to make the racing better. Volusia and Ocala have a dog leg in the back that makes them better.

Looking back a few weeks, Kevin Shaw (Seminole Wind) hit the nail squarely on the head on this subject. He doesn't know how clervoyant (sp?) he really is...

"I do have to respectfully disagree with Frasson 118 on one thing. Simply by turning an asphalt track into a dirt track is not the ultimate answer to solving short track racing's problems. A badly run asphalt track that turns to dirt just becomes a badly run dirt track".

Awesome, the Dirt revolution continues. I hope Desoto does go dirt. Who's next? I vote for Orlando speedworld, leave it the exact banking it is right now with a good tacky clay surface, that place would be a goldmine.

Amen Brother! The size and banking are both perfect for dirt racing.

My initial thought about Desoto, if it does turn into dirt.... what night will they run? My guess says he goes head-to-head against East Bay. Although it would hurt Ocala, Fridays would be the smart thing to do. But then again, being smart hasn't been John's strong suit.

You are right about Friday night

That would be the only thing that would make sense, to race on Friday. Going head to head with east bay wouldn't be a good Idea. Now Friday he would draw the cars from East Bay and possibly Hendry county. I think he is far enough from Ocala they wouldn't hurt each other. It would also help all tracks to keep the rules close so the teams can race at any of the tracks.
I believe the dirt revolution is taking hold. Fans and drivers alike are tired of follow the leader racing. Last week at North Florida we had racing all around the track. I think the driver that crossed the finish line first and last had fun, and at this level, thats what its all about. It also helps when Kenny spreads the purse thru the field. The 27th driver got $300 at NFS. Now that ain't all the money in the world but at least its tow money. Clay Ziegler and central sheds put up money for the extra race at East Bay the other week. To attract drivers like Ivedent loyd and Shawn Smith and the like you need a good pay out, but at the drivers meeting Kenny was talking about taking some of the purse and spreading it thru the field. Everyone seemed to be in agreement. Man got long winded. Bob.......

Jerry, Ocala and Desoto are about 165 miles apart. I doubt it would hurt either track due to the distance. Management would be a deciding factor though, and we all know about that angle. Plenty of dirt cars at both ends of the state from what I've seen.

actually, it would hurt Ocala a little in the upper classes. If Desoto went to Friday nights they would be best served to alternate the mods and late models with Ocala. Quite a few of the East bay regulars run at Ocala with the lates and mods.

                          Orlando SpeedWorld going to dirt----
I would in fact, miss the asphalt.
But, however, the good thing about Orlando is that the Dirt Surface
would never dry out, as there is always a steady stream of
water seeping out from underneath it.
                          No dust at all.

Underground spring? They should cap that sucker and use it. I heard someone say that the best dirt tracks are the ones that had asphalt under them. I wonder if that has to do with the asphalt holding moister? Or then agin it may be malarky, I don't know. It makes sense I guess, Volusia and Ocala are that way maybe others that I don't know of. I was last at Volusia when it was called Barbarvillle. Now that was a few days ago. Bob...
