Thomas Holds off Jones to Take the Checkered at Volusia Speedway Park!
    5-3-08
    By: Tera Gunter

Thirty sprints showed up to battle it out as the Florida Sprint Car Association descended the fast ½ mile oval of Volusia Speedway Park Saturday night. After three heat races that saw Tommy Denton, Otto Scrape, and Danny Jones take the checkered in their respective heats, 10 cars entered a B main from.......

It was great to see 30 sprinters at Volusia. Thomas & Jones did a good job with traffic. Jones would get close in traffic but Thomas would pull away...I'm getting use to the dry / slick tracks. Its what wet heavy tracks use to be in years gone by. These dry / slick tracks test set-ups, horsepower and driver skill. But it sure would be nice to see a Florida dirt track tacky with a cushion for a night...Overall I was happy that I went.

I tell you what, I am proud of our FSCA. After the field was stopped on lap 6, the remainder of the race was hammer down and caution free!!

Never heard of Gavin Thomas before. What's his background? It's not often that a new, or unheard of driver tops a field of 30 Sprints.

When does the FSCA come back to VSP?

            Gavin's Background

Gavin has been around racing since he was born. His uncle, Bruce Durden and I (Mike Thomas) have raced sprints since 1993. Gavin started racing karts at 10 years old for a year. After that he didn't race for about 4-5 years while his brother raced. He returned to racing starting in mini-sprints for two years on and off. Last year was his first year in sprints. He finished third in points and won Rookie of the Year with the FSCA. Thanks for all the compliments on the race. We enjoyed it!

Hi ya Jerry!! How have you been?

Gavin moved up to the Florida Sprint Car Association in 2007 from the Florida Mini Sprint Association. Gavin is an up and coming young racer who is quickly proving to be a force to be contended with. You will definitely hear more about this very talented young man.

As a side note, his girlfriend, Brittany Frosh, finished 3rd in the FMSA points standings last year and had 3-4 races in a row where she spanked those boys!

I'm not sure yet when we will return to Volusia. We had another date scheduled with the previous management, but it isn't on Volusia's current schedule.
