Buck Simmons

Hall of Fame racer Buck Simmons, 66, of Baldwin died Sunday.

Born Charles Leroy Simmons on July 31, 1946, he was known to both friends and competitors as Buck.

Simmons, who won 1,012 feature events during his career, was an inaugural member of the National Dirt Racing Hall of Fame (class of 2001) and the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame (class of 2009).

Buck was one of the nices guy you can meet, however alittle wild at one time back in his days. When I lived in GA I helped out with two brothers that raced against Buck on dirt and he always raced you hard and clean!!!

I first saw Bucky in 1971 at the old Jax raceway[Lane Ave.] He was driving a 1967 Ford fairlane,gold, and I think the # was 29. What I do remember is that even though the track was oiled clay he was one of the few who could "dirt track it" all the way through the corners and down a good part of the straight. On top of the speed he could carry he was extremely smooth much like Dave Mcginnis was on pavement Thanks for the memory and RIP

This is a HUGE loss to the entire region. Not many racers , if ANY, won more races than Buck. If he was there, you knew exactly who the main competition was. Saw him win a 100 lap, off-season race at Volusia, that was called the "Governors Cup" and seen him at several others as well.

This guy was as good as it gets. It's a big loss......

Here's Buck Simmons in his #81 Nova at the 1977 Florida 200 at Tampa. Notice that the car's on Firestones - but there's a mounted Goodyear sitting at the end of the trailer. Back then, it wasn't all that unusual for guys to have four different brands of tires on all four corners.
