My dad was an electrical engineer and used to get on me big time when he watched old OSW videos and I said "motor"... He would always say "where's the cord?".... An engine is powered by some type of fuel, be it gasoline, hydrogen, water etc. A motor is electrical and uses AC or DC to generate power... My car in the parking lot has an engine and the fan sitting next to me to keep me cool has a motor... The only race cars with motors that I ever ran were slot cars!!

you'll get a lot of snarky answers from the EE geeks ( see above ) but they're really full of it. as industry specific jargon, their definition is accurate enough.
as for real usage in the English language, "Engine" is a subset of "Motor". ie - all engines are motors but not all motors are engines. "Engines" generate kinetic energy ( normally through either an in- or external combustion process ) by first producing chemical or thermal energy while "Motors" all have a kinetic output but may merely convert from another type of energy ( electrical, say ).
if you want to dispute me you're first going to have to change these terminologies:
General Motors
Ford Motor Company
Department of Motor Vehicles
Motorcycle ( "what idiots, that should be 'enginecycle' snarks the EE nerd" )
the "Motor Manual" series of car repair books
every dictionary on the planet
etc, etc, etc
for instance, Dictionary.com has this for their very first definition of "Motor":
"1. a comparatively small and powerful engine, esp. an internal-combustion engine in an automobile, motorboat, or the like."Racers Supporting Racers - for all your Vero Beach area automotive repair needs:

here is the real answer
Engines are used in formula 1, motors are for stock car racing.
For proof listen to Klaus, a German road racing mechanic: "our new carbon fiber engine block is a stressed component that supports our monocoque space frame".
Then listen to Bubba, a southern dirt driver: "my motor done blowed up!"

as i have no experience with "coques", mono or multi, i'll have to defer to the "Bone"man on this one.Racers Supporting Racers - for all your Vero Beach area automotive repair needs:
