Also remember, that was the time period they allowed coolers in also. It was a cheap night out, to take a cooler of beer, bucket-o-chicken, the kids... and it didn't take 1/2 a paycheck to do it.
Once they disallowed the coolers, it went from $10 for a cooler full, to $3.00 a beer, and $5 for a hot dog and coke. Short sighted thinking in my opinion. Let em bring some beers, sodas, subs, snacks.... but get them IN. Even those people will wind up buying a few more drinks, some cotton candy or peanuts, maybe a picture or t-shirt.... if you suck em dry getting IN the gate, and force them into paying YOUR price for concessions, there won't be a flow of customers.
FAN FRIENDLY is where it needs to be. VSP got a lot of admissions from myself and friends just for the fact that we brought our food and drinks from home, whipped out the grill, and had a BLAST parked on the front row around turns 1-2. Plus, we spent other cash there in whatever fashion.
Too many folks think the way to make more money, is by charging more.... when they should be thinking about lowering prices, but increasing volume.
