  • We should pass the hat

For those who had not heard, the operator of "The Bullring", Marion County Speedway, was seriously injured at the track last week at the start of the show. Bill Cleary was struck by a car and has been in intensive care since that time.

According to the reports coming from Wayne Davis, Bill is beginning to recover, but his injuries were numerous and his rehabilitation will be a very long one.

This is a big set-back. Not only to Bill and his family, but from a racing point of view too. His track was on a very positive growth curve. I made one visit there and was really impressed with his approach. This guy is a real asset to our sport, and I think is a rising star among the people crazy enough to operate a track. Although I have no first hand knowledge of the situation, it is pretty clear that the operation of the track will be on hold for a little while.

Its time to help out one of our own. Can we get the helmets passed at the local tracks this week? Can we contact all the track operators and get this done in a few days?

I agree with you Rex, and hope someone can get the word out to all tracks in the state of Florida to pass their helmets to help our a fellow racing family. Praying for the family also.

Every dirt track owner should consider a benefit race for this worthy cause and person. Considering the size of his facility and the type of racing he obviously ran this show out of a love for dirt track racing and not as a get rich idea. In other words it is people like Bill who grow the sport from the bottom up. Lets don,t let him down now that he needs us.

Wayne, the problem is that I have not set anything up. I was hoping that someone would pick up the ball and run with it. I am slammed at work, and at night I'm getting a new racecar ready for Saturday, so I'm not in a position to make the calls and do the organization that will be needed.

I have an idea of who would do an excellent job at it! He is a guy who is irrepressibly positive and upbeat, he is a well-known ambassador for our sport in Florida, and I am sure he is known personally by all or most of the track operators. Give up? How about Bobby Diehl?
