This race was run this past Saturday at Gresham Motorsports Park in GA with a really unique format (why can't Florida tracks come up with interesting ways to conduct races like this - good for fans and interesting for the teams)... You'd think with a purse like this you'd see a field of 50+ cars, but just (LOL) 33 showed and only 30 started the race: Here was the format...
The 2nd Annual Beau Slocumb Memorial 208 will be open to any Pro Late Model team meeting the rules and specifications with a paid Registration form. The race will be split into three segments as follows:
Segment 1 - 100 green flag laps, $2,500.00 to the winner.
At the end of segment 1, all cars completing segment 1 will transfer to segment 2. The first car one lap down will receive a free pass to return to the lead lap. A predetermined number of lead lap cars will be inverted. During this segment break, teams will be permitted to change tires and make adjustments to their cars without loss of position (this is NOT a hot pit stop), as long as adjustments are completed within the allotted time.
Segment 2 - 75 green flag laps, $3,000.00 to winner.
At the end of segment 2, only the cars on the lead lap plus the first car one lap down will advance to segment 3. During the caution, cars will have the option to pit (This will be a hot pit stop). Cars choosing to pit will return to the lineup based on the order they exit pit road. Should a team choose not to pit, they will move up in the lineup accordingly.
Segment 3 - 33 green flag laps, $4,500.00 to the winner.
This will give both racers and fans a show rarely witnessed in asphalt short track racing. Drivers will be unable to simply log laps, but rather will have to push themselves to stay within competition for the entire event, resulting in much more excitement for the fans and racers as well.
10 Grand if you could score a clean sweep... not bad although it would probably cost the top teams 3-4 grand just to run....
Big mess in the first segment as Bubba Pollard blew up on lap 31 eliminating himself and seven other cars!
Chase Elliott is leading on lap 90 but stops on the track... flat tire... pits and loses a lap...
Willie Allen wins segment one... 14 cars complete 100 laps... Elliott is one lap down...
In segment two, Elliott passes the entire field and gets back on the lead lap on lap 129, then takes the LEAD from Augie Grill on lap 165 and wins segment two... He decides not to pit before segment three while Grill does pit...
Elliott leads all of the last segment to be the overall winner... 11 cars finished on the lead lap...
Who cares who won etc. because the neat thing is the fans got one heck of a show... Too bad we had to lose Beau Slocumb... he was a great young man who was becoming one of the better LM racers in the Southeast... Kudos to Gresham Motorsports Park for putting on this race and doing so with a fantastic format designed to give everyone some great action...
