  • Anyone been to Dover?

I usually him both Loudon races up here in NH (NHMS). My buds and I camp over on animal hill.

We were thinking of taking a road trip in the RV to Dover, has anyone camped out there? How is it to watch the race? Where are the better seats at?

I haven't been there in years but I use to love it. The first time I went, I think they charged $5 to camp in the parking lot for the weekend. Each year the price increased and they made a designated camping area a little further from the track. I think the seating capacity was about 50,000 with portable stands that year. Each year they added on and the last time I went I believe the seating capacity was 150 or 200 thousand. All sold out. As to the good seats, that's subjective. The higher the better and you can see most of the track. I use to like sitting in turn one right at the exit of pit road. Could watch the pit action and the whole race. I've sat in turn 4 also and that's a different view. It was easier to sit in the turns and watch the whole track. You don't need to keep moving your head back and forth. LOL
The last time I went, we added more people to our group and I volunteered to get my own seats for my family. At that time you could renew your seats and we had really prime seats. Well, the only seats we could get were in turn 3 and 4 on the bottom row. We couldn't see anything from there.
Like I said, I haven't been in years and it may have changed some more. We always had a great time, except for the bad seats the one year. They use to host a radio show from the enclosed grandstand on Friday nights. We use to go watch that and chill.

My book on the tracks says the seating capacity is 140,000. Book is 3 years old. Dover used to be a horse racing track a long time ago too.
Phone number for tickets in this book is 1-800-441-7223 or www.doverspeedway.com

Yeah, the horse track is inside of the car track. We use to visit the horse stables the first few years there but they finally closed them off. They have slot machines in the covered air conditioned grandstand, which is actually the stands for the horse races. Actually they built a huge addition to it for slots and gambling. Yeah, I think the track held over 150,000 at the time we went. I think they have actually reduced the seating since then. They have reduced the seating at quite a few of the tracks since the economy went to hell. I'm not sure what the reasoning is for doing that. Must be a tax advantage or something. Originally Dover would put up temporary stands for 10,000 to 20,000 and take them down each year. They didn't have to pay property tax on the temporary stands. They finally put all permanent ones in though. That's probably the reasoning for taking some out.
Hmmm, I just read that Dover is putting wider seats in and the seating capacity will be down to 113,000 by 2014. That is quite a decrease in the seating from what it use to be.

Sat in turn 1 a couple of times. As long as you are high enough up, you can pretty much see the entire track.

I don't know Bob. I can't imagine them running bikes on that track. It's high banked and the speeds would be pretty awesome. I suppose they could have run bikes on the horse track and they may have done that before the high banked track was put in. I can't answer your question.

casino is awesome. they dont raise the prices on the food their either just because the race is in town.

nice town. lot of stuff near track

10 minutes or so away from the beach..

wal mart about 10 minutes or so from track.

                  Not bad at all.

It may have been that track. As I remember it was pretty well banked. It was a fast track. It was a Class C AMA race that was held there every year. The motorcycle track used the part of the i field track so it was't just the oval.
