  • 2013 World Series at NSS

    Posted on Speed51 today:

Change is a good thing. The staff at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) knew after 46 years that the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing needed a change. The format of nine nights of racing in sprint-race feature formats is a thing of yesteryear. Today very few tracks run weekly in the divisions that make up the card at World Series each February.

The plan for 2013 will see some changes to the schedule that will give fans an opportunity to see extra distance races on Sunday and Monday and then Wednesday through the final Saturday. The addition of 100 lap races for Pros and Supers will be added during the week in addition to extra laps for the Modifieds.

"Track Owner Robert (Hart) and I have talked about how the World Series needed some changes because the program was getting stale," said track General Manager Terry Roberts. "We knew we had to do something and when Daytona made their announcement (of the UNOH Battle at the Beach) in 2013) it basically gave us the opportunity to put our plan into action."

Daytona International Speedway (FL) will hold special events for Late Models, K&N Pro Series cars, and NASCAR Modifieds on the Monday and Tuesday after the Bud Shootout on the big track as a park of their Battle at the Beach. Many thought this would be a big take-away from New Smyrna, but Roberts looks to benefit from NASCAR's plan.

"We will come in on Friday and Saturday night and run our Super Late Models, Pro Late Models, Tour Type Modifieds, and Florida Modifieds. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will be off days for the Tour-Type Modifieds."

This first step will allow for teams to run both Daytona and New Smyrna, perhaps with the same car.

"On Sunday night we will have a 100-lap Late Model race. On Monday we will have another 100-lap Late Model race," added Roberts. “We are not sure which will be the Pro Late Model race and which will be the Super Late Model race."

From here on out the schedule turns into a short tracker’s dream with big races every night leading up to the final night.

"Wednesday we will have a 76-lap NASCAR Tour-Type Modified race," in honor of John Blewett III explained Roberts. "On Thursday we will have a 100 lap Pro Late Model race and a 50-lap Tour-Type Modified event. Friday, of course, will be the Richie Evans Memorial 100. Saturday will be the Bright House Challenge 100 and 50 laps for the Pro Late Models."

The New Smyrna Speedway front office is also working on purse increases in addition to the schedule changes.

"The racers that are pulling down here want to race. I think the races needed to be extended to 50 or 100 laps. I think the Modified guys who are coming to Daytona will see these extended lap races and want to keep on racing that week. I think we will be able to keep a number of those people down here."

There will be some other changes with the Modifieds as well. The engine packages will be NASCAR Tour-legal only and the SK Modifieds will be dropped unless considerable interest can be acquired. Ricky Brooks will also take over the Modified tech portion and his staff will expand to keep things running smoothly.

There are also some plans to work with area hotels to help set up affordable accommodations for teams, fans and families.

Roberts has said his door is open and he wants feedback about the changes or other areas that can be improved. The World Series just came off a very successful year and it can have an even bigger year with promotion beginning with this announcement.

"We love to talk with people," said Roberts. "Good bad or indifferent. We need to know."

I like the direction they are going but I think I would try to also bring some new blood to the WS......THe Canadian cars could run for 3 days, maybe get the super mods to run for 3 days.....maybe even get some of the outlaw latemodel guys to come down from the midwest.......or even the pavement midgets or non winged sprints.......they could also try to piggyback on the Daytona events and run sanctioned events for the series that are running at Daytona.......

What about bringing back the lower divisions for a couple nights? After all, they are the ones that keep the tracks going for the rest of the year and it would be nice to include them in the biggest week of the entire year! Just sayin....

        Two problems with that theory:

People coming in from all over the country have ZERO interest in seeing local support classes.

Secondly, every year the management there hears the same thing... put us on, and we'll bring a BUNCH of cars. This year brought 12 Super Stocks and a cut in laps. Last years field was about the same, but still pathetic.... They ask for it to be on the schedule, bitch if it's not, and then nobody shows anyways.

Local classes are NOT any kind of answer to build up the World Series

P.S.- The Supermods cost an outrageous amount of money to show up. It's a GREAT show, but very expensive to host. If they were to pony up enough cash, I'm thinking their best move would be getting a full-point sanction for a NASCAR WMT show, to be run on Thursaday night. This is 2 days after the Daytona event, and the same night that the Twins are run during the day. As a fully sanctioned NASCAR event, the big track will promote it all day there. Cars already in town, 100,000 fans that are 1/2 hour away, plenty of time to get from Daytona to NSS...... I see it as a can't-miss proposition.

Except that they would have to become a NASCAR sanctioned track to hold a points race, wouldn't they 118??

And no offense to the posts above about the local classes but I don't go to the World Series (baseball) to watch a Little League or AAU team play, I don't go to the Superbowl to watch Pee Wee players play and I sure don't want to go to the World Series at NSS to watch local classes run. No offense intended to them. I used to own and drive a mini stock and I have many friends who drive in those classes but 9 nights of being at the track is long enough without adding more classes and having it run until midnight each night. As it was this year there was a few nights it ran that late.

fans like action and speed super mods are awesome . i actully like all open wheel classes . but i would rather watch a super stock race then a super late model race super stocks have wreck and are very action packed super lates are boring there fast as hell but dont hve tons of action. I think its dont hurt at all to let the let one small divsion a night even if its a little 20 lap race it dont take alot of time and the track shows them they care about them to the fans are going to come if you bring super mods in and nascar tour mods

Super mods would be awesome and would attract a whole new crowd.

As much as I hate to say it but Jerry is right about the local classes. Kudos to the super stocks that showed. I would like to see a big sportsman race with a good payout like we had a few years back at the Governors Cup. Different body styles that some of our northern friends can relate too.

Do away with the drawn out caution laps and the intermission. I heard complaints about them from several of our customers this year. However with that being said I noticed the cautions and intermissions didn't last as long as years past.

Mark should announce the Sk and tour mods. Their announcer sucked, reminded me of Roland.

Special concessions in the stands. The track stuff is pretty good but we need mini donuts, pork chop sandwiches and souvenir trailers.

Fans seeing some racecars up close and personal behind the bleachers would be a nice touch too.
