I went up to Volusia last night to hang out with some friends who were in the mini stock 50. It was my first trip there, aside from Speedweek, for at least a year and I had a great time.
Pavement fans would be amazed how the dirt cars tend to pass and repass each other. It happens sometimes on pavement, but passing and repassing is much more common on dirt.
They had 106 cars in 5 classes. The racing was excellent in the modifieds and LMs. There were about 30 pure stocks and 20 minis for their 50 lapper. I didn't see the sportsman; I was too busy talking as usual.
I got to catch up with Casey Feaster, a buddy I haven't seen for a year or two. Last time, Casey was still trying to break into the sport. Now he is current box stock champion, rookie of the year, and racer of the year at Putnam. What a start! He gave 'em hell last night in the pure stocks and spent most of the race in the passing lane on the outside. Its cool to see his plans coming together so well.
The crowd was surprisingly light: 400, maybe 500 fans by my estimate. I've heard that they tend to do much better than that. I also understand there is a problem tire availability in some classes, and that there are none in stock for some classes.
It looked like a good time was had by most, if not all: I only saw one helmet throwing incident!
