Benji Mills passed away suddenly while on a trip to Albany Ga. Benji began his racing in the skeeter cars at Valdosta and Lake City. From there he migrated to sprint cars mostly in the Tampa Bay area. His size always worked against him in sprints so he then began helping others. He crewed with Robert Smith in the south and worked with Steve Stapp in the north.Being a long distance trucker he was unable to commit to full time pit work but when in town he assisted numerous drivers in the Indiana area. In addition to his racing background he was a consumate storyteller, who with his humor, made a 2 plus hour drive to Lake City seem to be like a trip to the 7-11. I have been blessed to have known him and thankful for the mentoring he gave my son and really anyone else willing to listen and learn. God speed old friend enjoy the races from the best seat in the house.

My Best Friend in the world Benjie Mills passed away earlier today from a heart attack...Benjie has been a friend of mine since 1982 when we came together in hot laps in turn 3 at North Valdosta Speedway...We talked everyday something 3 and 4 times a day. As I came through Thomasville last night (Sunday) on the way home from the Tulsa Shootout and was going to meet for coffee but at 11:30PM HE SAID, " it was a lil late being he had a field trail to go to at 5 am..call me and let me know you made it home safe". We talked yesterday and I told him that I wanted to do a tribute color scheme on the race car this year for Don Whettington, Robert Smith's car owner in Tampa that passed away in Sept......Now it will be the YELLOW #98 of Benjie Mills from Tallahassee Fl.....I love you Mills...I will miss our talks that we have everyday.....REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND....see-ya soon

Seven weeks ago I lost my only brother. For some reason, as I sat at the computer tonight I decided to google his name and up popped your post. I have no idea who you are, but wanted to say thank you for your kind words. Benjie had many loves: racing, hunting, telling stories, his nieces and nephews. But racing was the earliest one I remember him having. I remember at a very young age going to races and being there "for the ceremony of the raising of the flags". Sometimes I wonder if our father realized what he was starting. I remember Benjie coming to my wedding in 1981 with his race car hooked up to the back of his truck! It's a good thing I got married early enough in the day for him to make it to the track because if he had to make a choice between my wedding and racing I might not have wedding pictures that include him. Benjie was very proud of the fact that he took my kids to their first race at 3 & 5 years of age. I want to thank you for posting the picture, it's great! I've never seen it but am excited that I can pass it on to our parents.
Thanks you once again for your kind words! RIP dear brother...you are missed.
