  • Back to the Unusual...

Found these pics on the Ohio Racing FaceBook photo album. Now, I know that Tim Richmond drove this car:

....but it appears that there was another "3-to-1" creation, because this is NOT the same car, and that first car (above) was cut up before it even actually raced (according to legend):

This is unusual, for sure. But this is not the only weird machine around at the time.......another machine, of the like and matter, that tested at Sandusky Speedway by, I think, Tim Richmond,(and I am probably wrong on the driver) was another outlandish creation that omitted the left-front wheel on it's attempts to rock and roll.
It wasn't legal anywhere, and out there, somewhere is a photo of it. Someone will pull it up, and the story to follow it.
Thanks for sharing great stuff like this! r.

Rog.... this probably is the one you're thinking of. This one doesn't have either a left front or a left rear.... only a left center. It's a 4-wheel car, not 6 as it would appear.

This car was built by Ken Reece from Ohio, to be raced at Oswego. After testing, but prior to racing it, Oswego Speedway got wind of the car and promptly wrote in a new rule, stating that l cars MUST have 4 wheels mounted in the standard position. This eliminated not only the 3-1 car we see, but also anybodies idea for a 6-wheeler as well.

In testing this car, which was both fast and stable, Tim was kinda uneasy about not having a left front.... didn't really have a reference point to work with, they considered mounting a dummy wheel up there just to take his mind off of the situation.

And yes, it was cut up for scrap before ever being raced.

        Guys...

The car in the first pic *is* the Ken Reece car. That's Richmond in the car, in the infield, at Sandusky, about to be pushed off. According to legend, that particular car was cut up before it ever ran one single race lap, as Jerry stated, because as soon as word got to Oswego about how bad-fast that car was in testing, they wrote that car right out of the rulebook.

The second car (in the bottom pic) is the one I'm curious about. It's definitely got a different cage, the engine sits upright (instead of laid over like the Reece car), the front end is entirely different, looks to be a newer-built machine, and it appears to have Late Model-sized Hoosiers on it (as opposed to those giant Supermodified tires like on the Reece car).

It's just...an interesting build...and it was definitely influenced by that Reece car.

So, there really was at least two of 'these' around; I still think that there was a third one, as I'm not totally convinced that the first photo is the one I had seen before.

But for now, I'll say two creations-----until someone proves otherwise.
