Here is the press release from Senator Latvala's office:

Putting The Sunshine Speedway Property Back To Work!

Clearwater, Florida - Senator Jack Latvala (R-Clearwater) is pleased to announce that at his suggestion District 7 of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun the process of determining if an underutilized state asset can be put back to work to help create jobs and new economic activity in central Pinellas County.

The old Sunshine Speedway not only generated family-oriented entertainment, but also fostered a number of small auto repair businesses in the corridor between Ulmerton Road and 118th Avenue North. This property was purchased by the state for the Roosevelt Boulevard connector which has been postponed. Constituents of the Senator have suggested re-opening the Speedway in the interim which he then discussed with FDOT. They have now agreed to advertise for bids on leasing the property. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for 11:00 AM on December 8th at the site which is located at 4550 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater.

“This is a win-win situation for the state, which will receive rent until it is used for road construction, and for the community, which will benefit from jobs at the facility and in the collateral auto repair businesses related to the track,” Senator Latvala stated.

For more information, contact Senator Latvala’s office at (727) 556-6500.

      Just do it

There can be a group put together with sufficient funding to accomplish this if conditions are or can be made favorable. The first thing you must determine is a proper business model taking into account the time it will take to resurect the facility, fan base, and compitition base to produce the show and good intentions do not count. Secondly, the time to deliver a break even situation will exceed the time the state will give you and they will never reliquish the title to the property regardless of your sucessful operation. While it seems the track is able to be saved, the truth is that once the state got title it was doomed without serious power on the side of the track and you do not have that in place yet. If the bidding goes to the schedule listed then there is no time to get the ducks in a row unless there is a goast power broker hidden in here somewhere with very deep pockets and well connected. If there is more time then I would be willing to assist in securing a buyer to reopen the facility even to the posibility of a partnership with the state in a long term situation. Nobody would be happier than I to see one more 100 lapper at Sunshine even if I have to lay out of my own race schedule to be there. Don't waste time, lets hear some facts and see what we can accomplish!

I think it would have to be a long term lease deal. Say 15 to 20 years with 10 years guarenteed and no breaking the lease with at least a 3 year minimun (after the 10 years) notice, and the FDOT would buy back what the potenial investors have invested in it (lighting, stands, equipment, etc.). Fat chance of that happening.

          Here's the deal

Us "have nots" can speculate all we want.
But if the "haves" can find a way to make money off this , then it could happen.
I just can't get my hopes up . Again.

Ch. 8 news just had a nice segment on it. At least it's created interest in the main stream media.

The deadline to submit bids has been changed to January 19th, 2012 at 3:00 PM. There will be another opportunity for interested bidders to inspect the property prior to bid date.
