  • Lanier Speedway to Close

BRASELTON, Ga. (AP) - The owner of Lanier National Speedway in Braselton has announced that weekly races will end after almost three decades, though the track will stay open for some other events.

Owner Donnie Clack tells The Times of Gainesville

that the economy was a factor in the decision to end the weekly racing, a longtime tradition for northeast Georgia race fans.

Officials say the Fourth Annual James Garrison Memorial Race set for Sept. 24 will be the final weekly event held at the track.

Though weekly races are ending, officials say the previously scheduled Ice Cold Shriner's Bowl will still be held in January, and 2012 Speedfest will go on as planned.

Clack said he's looking at the possibility of leasing the facility for other events such as rodeos or concerts.

    What a shame

I raced at that track a couple of times and it was great! Also has a multi- tier "hill" to park on and enjoy the races from the back of your truck or inside your car. Bummer.

      Man this is real sad!!!

Bud Ludfords built that track as a dirt track and made it first class from the first day!!!

I helped out two brothers that raced in the latemodel class when it first opened.

Later they paved it and had NASCAR Bush races there in the 80s and 90s.

And in 1989-90 me and a friend of mind had a 74 Chevelle we raced in one of the lower classes.

Hope somebody keeps it going. It's a very fan and family friendly track!!!

A 30 Year tradition will come to an end on September 24, 2011 at the 4th Annual James Garrison Memorial Race. Management and Staff at Lanier National Speedway have made the decision to end the weekly racing program due to factors beyond their control. After much thought and consideration the Speedway has decided to continue with the already scheduled January 2012 Ice Cold Shriner's Bowl and 2012 SPEEDFEST.

        wow thats tough

founder Bud Lunsford will be joining in on the "final showdown" activities. The Speedway has asked several past track champions and other former drivers back to join the nights events. Make plans to join the "final showdown" of Lanier National Speedway weekly racing.

I live up near Lanier now, and this is no surprise. I like Donnie a lot, but every racer I have talked to refuses to race at Lanier because of him. Up the road, Anderson Motor Speedway is doing well. Gresham Motorsports Park is doing OK. I think this is just another case of a track going away because of its operation, not just the economy.
