A number of years have passed since the last SCCA sanctioned race at famed Charlotte Motorspeedway, but August 20 the Central Carolina Region SCCA will host the return of sports car racing to the facility. The V8 StockCar Series will bring its' brand of booming, high horsepower action to the mix with two points races, with the second under the lights Saturday night. CMS was built in 1959 by Bruton Smith and his partner, legendary NASCAR driver Curtis Turner. The first race was the 1960 World 600, which took place on June 19, 1960. The 2.25 mile road course has seen both the IMSA Camel GT Series and the American Lemans Series with the latter staging the last professional road race at the facility in 2000.

Some thirty cars are expected in the big bore group with most being eligible V8 Series points in one of the groups four classes.

In the Porterfield Enterprises V8 GT-1 class the racing Monette's will take on three time series champ Dave Machavern in his fast Tommy Riggins built Ford. Bob and Zack Monette will be wheeling their ex Trans Am Series Mustangs, with Paige Monette Alexander shoeing her 2006 Chevrolet Corvette. Tims Lyons and Richard Bridgette will also bring out their fast Mustangs to challenge the high banks along with the C4 Corvette of Wayne Cabaniss. A fourth racing Monette, Will, takes on the Porsches and Panoz of the LG Motorsports V8 GT2 class in his 2008 Corvette built on a stock tub.

In the Howe Racing V8 GTA, Jim and Chris Matheson, Mark Tcherkezian, and John Morgan will battle with class fast guys Randy Walker and Tommy Graham for the honors.

In the Pitboxes.com V8 SPO class, two time champ Larry Hoopaugh will look to beat back the challenge of Hilton Head Island's Tad Segars, Charlie Branham and his Monte Carlo and the Ford Fusion of Mary Wright.

Only at Daytona, where cars like Machavern's can top 200 mph, will competitors see higher speeds. It should be a thrill for all concerned.
