  • Just Remembering Jim

Here's a shot that I took at Sunshine Speedway about 1980 or so. His Grant King car was different than many of the home grown creations that ran down here. His Dad wanted him to do well, so this car was aquired from up north. I am not saying all home grown local cars were bad! Jim had one as well the previous year he ran. Actually when Jim hooked up with Ledford in a Harry Campbell car, the influx of dollars made his career take off.

Thanks for posting the photo. Jimmy Haynes sure was a great guy. As much as we all love auto racing, it can go horribly bad on very rare occasions when a driver is killed or seriously injured.

It was great when Jimmy got a good ride with Charlie Ledford, but I also was a big fan of Jimmy when he had his own car like the one you pictured and even the car before that one. It was the good ol' days when Bernie and Susie Hallisky, Jimmy and his wife, Sharon, and Jimmy's parents were there at Sunshine every week.

Jimmy was also very good at DeSoto and on the dirt at East Bay and the Tampa Fairgrounds.

It's been many years since Jimmy lost his life racing but he will never be forgotten by those of us fortunate enough to know him.
