  • New project and need help with tranny

You probably won't see it on an oval track as its being built for road courses and auto cross.

I am building a V-8 S10 super truck. Its a 93 with a 5 speed, looking to keep it a manual but considering a TCI automatic due to costs. Unfamiliar territory for me so if anyone has done this conversion please let me know what tranny would work best. Looking to have something with an overdrive.

Is there something wrong with the standerd 5speed in it? 5th gear is a OD stock.
Stock 5speed is pretty good one came on biggist motor.
As for TCI ,I offered a auto tranny design to them, but they were know it alls and didn't want to pay for better then they make.
There auto tranny dose not road race well,it burns up,just like it dose on asphalt oval track racing, but works OK on dirt tracks.

Stay with a 5 speed. If the truck has 1 in it, must be from behind a 4.3 Litre engine. 2.8 and 4 cyl. won't bolt up. Different bellhousing pattern and you cannot change it. All 1 piece. Don't know of many Automatic's that hold up on asphalt, unless it's like a Super/Street stock. I do Automatics and been there and done that.

Thanks for the info, it was originally a 2.8. I like the Tremec trannys but I don't want to reach behind me to shift. Already sliding the motor back some.

Here's a good website with information from people that have done S-10 V8 conversions.

You def. going v8? The 2.8 can be a pretty strong motor if built properly. It's a much lighter motor. If you're the least bit interested, I can give you lots of info on that (I have a 91 Camaro with a 3.1, just a longer stroke than the 2.8, and had a pretty stout motor in it.). Also, my dad has a 94 s-10 that he (I helped some) put a 350 in... I can offer some advice.

Haven't seen many S-10s TOWING anything lately.
