Rules would of been nice to have. I know they have a outlaw type or did at GMP but from what I remember it was more like our sportman cars then a super/latemodel.
It would be nice if one of are florida tracks would try a outlaw latemodel class I personally think it would draw a hole new fan base.

I would love to see an "Outlaw" bodied series around here. The ABC bodies are soooo expensive, and take sooooo many man-hours to put together, that the teams would be a lot further ahead if they didn't need to screw with all that. Sloped noses, slab sides, some spoiler in the back.... all for the price of a few sheets of aluminum, a box of rivets, a little bit of lexan, and access to a sheet metal brake.

I hope this series gains some support and expands... maybe even into Central Florida for a show or 2.

                    Results!

Saturday, June 11th was the first of 5 "Georgia for Fair Tax / David Ragan Ford" Outlaw Latemodel Races at Watermelon Capital Speedway and it was a great start to the season with more to come!

David Hodges from Valdosta, Ga, in the black #16, was the fastest qualifier with a 16.41 and that gave him the pole for the night. Warren Mobley from Griffin, GA was second with a 16.60, and Steve Renner from Perry, GA was third with a 16.68.

On the start of the feature Hodges grabbed the lead, with Renner second and Mobley third. Around lap 9 Mobley, in the #95, pulled off with engine trouble releasing the third place position to Billy Chancy from Kathleen, Ga driving the #81. Around lap 25 Sammy Short in the #5 from Hampton, Ga couldn't hold the bottom which opened the door for Steve Barker in the white #64, also from Hampton, to drive under him for the 4th position. Not long after the pass Barker would retire to the pits with engine trouble moving Short back to 4th. For the first 30 laps, the top 7 were nose to tail. It was a very competitive race, if anyone made a mistake they would pay for it with a loss of position. On lap 40 Billy Chancy spun in the middle of turns 3 and 4 moving him to the rear for the restart. This moved Sammy Short to the 3rd position. Here's the real "kicker", Watermelon Captial Speedway always has a double file restart and this race would be no different! This gave Chancy a real shot for the win, even though he had to restart at the rear. The restart showed Hodges on the inside with Renner outside, when the green dropped Renner out gunned Hodges to turn one but could not clear him. Hodges held his nose just off the inside quarter panel of Renner! They raced door to door down the back stretch. Hodges finally pulled ahead again with Renner settling into second once again, Short third, and Chancy charging from the rear for fourth! Once again, Short had trouble holding the bottom groove which opened the door for Chancy! Chancy made the pass with a few laps to go. David Hodges was your winner with Renner second, and Billy Chancy third.

The winner David Hodges was a dirt car, it was a Rayburn chassis. Renner was a full asphalt car (Rander Car) with an ABC body. Billy Chancy has a Port City chassis with an ABC body. Sammy Short has an older (mid 90's Port City) asphalt chassis, the body is an older asphalt type but the back has been opened like a dirt latemodel and so was Steve Barker (home built camaro clip car). The rest were dirt cars but older cars, once they get the cars dialed in they should be more competitive... remember this was our first race!

Also, engines... Hodges had a "built" engine with a 350 cfm 2bbl, not sure on Renner's engine, Billy has the McGunegill Ford crate engine with a 350 cfm 2bbl, Short has the 602 crate with 650 hp carb and so does Barker. Warren Mobley has an asphalt chassis (Left Hander chassis) with a custom body, looks asphalt but the rear is open like a dirt car. His car looks a lot like the Outlaw Super Latemodels from up north, GREAT looking car. He has a built engine with a 350cfm 2bbl and qualified 2nd.
