Jack Duffy Wins First Feature of 2011
The Florida Midget Auto Racing Association was in action Saturday Night May 21st at Punta Gorda Speedway with Jack Duffy of Sarasota in the #1 claiming his first feature event of the season. Jamie Barnum of Brooksville in the #7 started out leading the field to the green flag and held the point for the first seven laps before being past by "Hard Charging" rookie Steven Maier in the #23 out of Port St Lucie. On lap twelve Maier came in contact with the #6 of Jay Stutz from Riverview while attempting to put him a lap down causing debris to fall on the track. As the caution flag came out third place Chris Gimmler from Palm Beach Gardens in the #51 was unable to slow in time and crashed hard into second place Barnum causing both of them to take a wild tumble down the front stretch and into turn one. Both Drivers were OK but the cars were too heavily damaged to continue. With Duffy now moved up to second place on the restart he kept the pressure on Maier until the two cars collided sending Maier into a spin. The second restart of the race saw Duffy holding off the #30 of points leader Mile Belusar from Punta Gorda to win the 20 lap shortened feature event. Belusar held on for 2nd and Geoff Styner in the #2 from Cape Coral was third. Barnum was the winner of the heat race.
