Well, I had my car in the pits last night at Orlando, but after practice my plans for the evening took a sharp turn. I was told that track announcer Mark ("Voice of NSS") had injured his back and could not attend. I was asked to fill in, so I was off to the tower for the night and became the "undocumented, instant announcer".
It is an understatement to say that things came together at the last second. The public address system, for exampe, didn't arrive until 7:55. But no big deal, in Mark's absense everyone pitched in and things went smoothly.
The DAARA ran last night with 4 classes of antiques. They handed me a stack of notes about each car, so I had go get organized FAST, but I think I bluffed my way through it ok. Of all the nights to be completely sleep deprived! I had a heck of a week and was feeling a little fuzzy and slow at times. At least I managed to keep my Turrets syndrome under control and didn't let any bad language slip!
Overall, I think we have had much better shows. The SLM and Strictly Stock features were fine, but the other local classes were all run-aways with not much passing. The DAARA brought about 40 cars, so thanks to that group for holding their end up.
The track made a good effort by getting a dozen racecars to park on SR 50 all day. They had a digital sign too, with info about the nights racing. One suggestion: all the cars were gone by 4 pm. Its too bad we can't get some guys who are not racing that night, or at least not practicing, and leave them out there until race time.
At 7 pm, I called my buddy Andy who was already on his way to the track, and told him to go back and get his helmet and firesuit. Andy made his first mini stock start in my car last night, and I thank him for taking it easy. I had a brand new engine in my car with about 5 laps on it. Because it was untested, Andy ran a handful of easy laps, although I know the racer in him wanted to mash it and go.
Wishing Mark a quick recovery! And thanks to Butch for giving me the chance to help out a little.
