  • Who helped you?

I was reading Jeff Bailey's story about his race and how Chad Pierce was helping him out and it got me to thinking..
Who was instrumental or helped/ gave advice to you when you first started racing??
I didn't know the first thing about racing and didn't even know much about how to work on cars when I started. I can remember Barbara Pierce coming up to my window after my first practice session EVER, and saying, "man, you're using way too much brake going into the turns". Sometimes you have to slow down to go fast!" Huh? I had to thing about that one for awhile...
Years later, Lee Faulk told me the same thing after watching me practice in a Late Model.
Barbara and Butch were always there to answer a question or lend a hand!
David Gould probably helped me more than anyone though. I can remember him asking me how much stagger I was running and I said, "uh...what's that?"
Another time I lost some front end shims and David was showing me how to put them back in. He told me to hold a wrench on the head of the bolt and I was struggling to do so. He finally says, " Have you EVER worked on a car before in your life?"
David Salley also taught me ALOT!
THANKS TO ALL! I am forever grateful!!!

Slowing down to go faster is almost impossible to teach some drivers. The ones that learn it are the best drivers. Slow down, save your equipment. I think David Rogers is the best at NSS I've ever seen at it.

Watched David lead almost the whole race in the Pete Orr Race at NSS using the rev limiter. Anderson would catch him in the turn, but with the gear he had he would pull away in the corner and hit the rev limit just in the next turn. Wayne would get sooo close and even at his door, but David would pull away. Best stategy I've seen in a long time.

        Nice post,
Mike Soukup helped me more than anyone. I was pretty good with mechanics and fabricating but didn't know much about set ups. He was always there helping me do whatever needed to be done and never asking for anything.

This is a great post just surprised there are no more comments than there are.

But Homer Gordon helped alot of people along with Chad, Butch and Barbara Pierce and Pete Orr just to name a few that come to mind. Also Greg Stevens from Stevens Engines has helped people. So come on guys, there has to be someone who has helped you out in the beginning when you were new and didn't really know that much!!!!!

Come on now, I know you can do it.

Thanks from me must go to

John Gamble (central Florida Racecars) he was not only great with set-ups but tweaking them, Built awesome chassis

Big John Smith from Coleman Fla. Also great with chassis.

Moose Alderman (used to stand at the fence while i was under caution and point head-to-foot, head-to-foot (to make me focus), also a master of carburetors.

My Dad of course, the old dirt tracker from the 50's and 60's still knew more about racing asphalt than i did when i started.

Jim Higginbotham did something but i forgot..........

And my first time ever driving a car was OSW and as mentioned on this thread earlier, two of the most dedicated people to auto racing......... after my 1st race i got advice from both Barbara AND Butch Pierce.

                    Rsb?

When I first started knowing nothing about a race car, a guy named John Mitchell was the one that guided me in what parts I needed and setting up my car and he's still helping me out today. Wesley Keller was the one that took the time to teach me how to get the car around the track. I owe them both a big thank you!! Now days my brothers Randy and Rodney keep me on the track. I owe them a big thank you as well.
                    just wantin' ta race.....

Now that is cool. You helped someone and did not even realize you had and then thanked. Now that is cool.

                        Have a great weekend!!!

Delbert Futch got helped me get started when I wanted to race but had no idea how to get started. His driver at the time Glen Hume was always there for me whenever I needed advice. Throughout the last 15 years alot of people have been just a phone call or drive away. People like Robbie Hager, Don Hellyer, Randy Hecker and David Lebeau. Both of my grandfathers, my dad and my brother have all been there along the way. It is good to know that even after a bad night at the track you have the support of great friends and family.
