  • Speedworld - consider this

I think this will sell some tickets to this weeks races if anyone will do it.

The space shuttle is scheduled to take off this Friday afternoon around 4. That means SR 50 that runs past the track, will be packed with east bound travelers to Titusville and the coast all morning, and then packed with west bound traffic all afternoon. They will be passing by the track just before race time.

Wouldn't this be an excellent day to have a few good looking racecars parked out on 50? How about a digital sign saying something like "Car racing tonight at 8! Family fun for $10, kids free" or something like that? If you use a sign, remember to keep it simple. 98% of the viewers don't have any idea what a "super late model" is.

Part two of the idea (from Frasson): set up some display cars, track passes, pretty girls, etc.) in Titusville all day. We will have tens of thousands of people filling Titusville and the coast on Friday, and it looks like the track could exploit them!

Jeff, you are a good dude. I knew that you and your great looking car would help, but I don't think this is for us to put together. We need some direction from the track, right?

I'm sure the track will support us anyway they can.....I'm gung-ho about circle track racing and supporting my home track. I'll call the track office tomorrow and let them know about your great idea.

Great idea, all the hotels at 50 and 95 are booked. The problem is the traffic, as the shuttle missions come to a close more people are coming for the launches. The last launch some of our customers sat in traffic for well over 2 hours just to get back to our office. Its a 10 minute walk from my office to US1 and 50.
The other problem is there seems to be little or no motivation for the track to bring in new customers. I don't understand it, this place has been packed with snow birds all winter long, many of which have no idea there is a track 15 minutes down the road.

              Boneman,

Orlando Speedworld has a number of racecars that will be parked on HWY 50 the morning of the shuttle launch......and they even have plans for a lighted sign to advertise the races. Barbara said some cars will be there as early as 9:30 am.

You know the old saying, "great minds think alike". Glad they were on top of it, and hoping for a good result!

Wow, if we could some radio or TV spots, everybody would know the answer to: "Where the Hell is Bithlo, FL."

More advertisement, of any sort, equals more people in the stands. Which of course leads to more money for the track. Which of course leads to bigger purses. Which of course leads to bigger car counts. Which of course...OK, this could on forever, but you get my point.

Good luck. I hope you guys pack the stands this week. I'll see you all next week.

Its probably a safe bet that the track won't be packed. The goal has got to be realistic: a measurable improvement in the front gate would be great. Using only my estimates, I bet they are averaging no more than 100 in the stands, so it would be cool to see it jump up.

So if you ran the track would you add help at the concession stand? I certainly would and here is why. I recently had a long talk with a friend who went to a big, well attended show, and took his friends and family. He had good intentions to help the track, arrive hungry and spend money at the track concession. However, that track was overwhelmed with fans and understaffed. The main thing he brought away from that event was waiting 45 minutes just to get a drink, and then leaving early to finally get something to eat!

If the night goes well at Speedworld, the last thing you want is to send new fans home unhappy or frustrated. I'd gamble a few bucks and get a full staff at the concessions.

I am happy to hear the track is doing something. I hope this is a sign of the times to come and they get this place going again.

Also remember, these launch watchers will be hot, tired, and dirty. If they don't stop Friday night the sight of some great looking cars will be embedded into their minds for the next Friday, or a Friday down the road. In other words, don't get discouraged if this week doesn't do as well as you hope this week. The long term effects will be worth the effort. billy

One thing that would help OSW (and a few other tracks) would be to offer a better variety of food... just burgers, hot dogs and chicken fingers are OK but tracks that offer a varied menu of GOOD food at reasonable prices can bring the fans back just because they take the time to take care of the fans' appetite...
I always thought it would be cool to turn the area behind the SpeedWorld grandstands into a mini midway like at a State Fair... Bring in some specialty concession people that do all kinds of neat stuff like turkey legs, BBQ, candy apples, pork chop sandwiches, curly fries etc. Get your cut but don't rob them blind... All the blinking lights etc help create an atmosphere of a fun place to be... Golden Gate Speedway used to do this and it WORKED!
If OSW would make the effort to bring a Crash-A-Rama atmosphere every week, that should help the fan count...
