Bob Harmon studied the area in which he was going to present a race. He read the local papers, listened to the local radio stations and made calls to local people he knew and trusted. He WORKED his butt off at home, mostly via the phone then he came to that city and track weeks before the date of his race. He bought radio time and newpaper ads. He WORKED the area well ahead of his race date and he did it in person. He had appointments to meet the key personnel in the media outlets and he got air time and ink big time, some bought but nearly as much for free. He did this TWICE before each event he hosted at XYZ Speedway in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi or wherever. He'd host the local media at the track for lunch on a Thursday before a Saturday night race. If a particular media person was a racing novice he'd take extra time with them and in some cases put them in a pace car and ride them around the track. My point is he WORKED his butt off to PROMOTE his events and he treated both the fans and racers fairly. When I was working at Hialeah I twice had the please of doing one of Bob's whirlwind pre-race promo tours and believe me, it was an eye opening experience and he explained ever step in detail. He was a friend, teacher, role model and top shelf PROMOTER and yes, his example would work today like never before.
