The Race at North Wilkesboro

Me and the wife decided to go up there and watch the race. First let me start off with what a great race. I know at times there was a 2 or 3 car brake away but there was plenty of racing throughout the field. The last 100 laps was the best watchiing the 08 try to find away around the 18 until a lap car got in the way of the 18 and the 08 got by.
The track personnel bent over backwards to help us out and thinked us for coming. Even the announcer thinked the crowd for coming and seemed like he did it a dozen times. Also when they new the race was not going to be run Saturday night they didn't keep the crowd there for hours waiting to make a decission. They made it quick as soon as they new there was bad storms coming and guess what the rain date was 2 pm Sunday afternoon boy there's idea.
They also kept things rooling when a race was scheduled to run at a certain time it was on the track at that time. They even told the modified guys if they were not on the track by 2:00 that the green was waving rather they were there or not.
Ok the food I didn't try anything but some coke and popcorn but the coke was cold and the popcorn fresh and not to bad of a price.
This is just for Boneman the bathrooms were clean and they had soap.
Every place we went while we were there had welcome race fans signs and the people treated us very nice. These people are sure pround of there track and they should be.

As an announcer, I always "think" the crowd... just funnin' with ya...
Glad they put on a good show and did the right thing when there was the possibility of severe weather Saturday night... Sunday sounded like a picture-perfect day... Was neat to see the #08 take the win... same number as Beau Slocumb ran...

I have mixed emotions on that. Beau was an AWESOME driver and it is so sad he was lost at such a young age. Seeing the #08 win was cool even if Beau never ran for SS Green Light.

Now the other feeling is I wish that someone that worked on his own car would have won the race. Unless something has changed this year the SS Green Light team is a driver developmental team. (Or as I call it daddy pays Butch Miller to setup and do all the work the car for you.) I just would rather have had a driver who did his own work all week take the win.

Lastly and most importantly I hope the race was a big success and they run it again next year. I am so glad to see that track used again it is an awesome track that was just sitting there for so many years.

Best mix of racers from all over the country, since the old days of the All American 400 at Nashville. Even better than the Snowball Derby.

Geez...was he on a respirator?.....that dude has got to be gettin' old!

Oxygen assistance or not....I still love to see the old guys puttin' in the work....I'm thinkin' though...remember reading a story about him in SCR (years ago) where it pretty much stated he was a silver spooner but could still get the job done. I think his dad or his family owns Evergreen Spedway out there in Wash State.....I think....

Really all it makes me think of is Olympia Beer.

Evans is a "semi-spooner"

You're right, Evans comes from money. But I call him a "semi-spooner" because he'd work on his own stuff - and then he'd get in and drive the wheels off it. Unlike a lot of the present day rich kids he raced clean. Back in the early '90's he ran a lot of the Big 10 races up @ Concord. Talked to him a couple of times and he seemed like a decent guy....

Didn't mean to paint him in a bad light....I've always been a Garrett Evans fan. He did/does seem to be a "hands on" racer and while he may have had some money at his disposal, he sure didn't/doesn't race like it. Never heard or seen (in print) a bad word about him.

I was just trying to make a lighthearted comment about him still being around and still travelling all over the country to race his Late Model. Thanks, Beach Bum, for bringing that up. Was I right about the race track part? Seems like I remember that from somewhere....probably SCR or Circle Track.


But I do stand firm on the Olympia beer part.

Yep,his folks own a track back in WA. I believe his Pop was in the car business as well. Gotta agree about the Olympia Beer - good stuff! Been a l-o-n-g time since I've had one.
