I know everything about you Don, even the facade you keep on this very message forum. As for my anger, that's where your wrong, I have no anger, I'd call it several lessons learned Don, the hard way. You pushed the buttons, you deal with the repercussions.

....and racers/fans/people wonder why Florida racing is so screwed up...LOL....Rex just started out complaining about something.

And then Nerone had to come in and start something, calling people names. And he wonders why no one liked/likes him? Jeff was sayin' that promoters/track operators don't wanna listen the racers about stuff like prices/ideas for bringing fans in/etc. I tend to agree; I haven't seen anything in the last ten years at any race track thought to bring new fans to the track, like the slot cars, like the Wii thing, like the R/C cars. There's really nothing for the kids to do *at the track*. Yeah, there might be a playground, but that's not gonna keep the 12-16 year old crowd busy, especially the boys. They get to the track, they see a 4-car field, run a 20-lap feature, with 16 laps of cautions...they're gonna get bored. And Westerman made a REALLY good point:
As a kid, I never went to a race track to play pinball, race slot cars or play on the monkey bars... I went to watch the races!! To me there was the absolute anticipation from the time I hopped in the car until you could finally see the lights of Orlando Raceway, Eau Gallie or Golden Gate... the racing was the attraction... If you have a good show, make the price affordable for families, then you don't need any "extras".... I do agree a supervised playground for the real little kids is a good idea, but many of those I've seen at tracks, I wouldn't let my kids play there because they are dirty and/or in disrepair....
I was the same way. I never went for video games, pinball, etc., either; I went for the *racing*. Of course, I was helping on Dad's car, too, most of the time. Problem I see is, there isn't much of a "good show" (great racing) any more. Even at the bigger events, time trials (boring...), start the fast guys in the front (follow-the-leader; hell, my kids played that at school...in kindergarten)...no passing...no show.

Put the fast guys in the back. Have heat races at the big races. Invert the top 20 cars. Make the fast guys come from the back. Make it affordable for the family. $20 to get in for a 50-lapper Sportsman race? $30 to get into the pits? $600 to win a SLM feature? PUT ON A SHOW!

                  (Sigh....)

Jimmy you make some valid points.. I hate to say this, but you go elsewhere and they do have the fast guys start from the back.. No ifs, ands, or buts.. That is what makes the shows.. Now I can remember us discussing Slinger on here last year and low and behold, my Mom overheard me talking about Slinger one time and she remembers going to those races in the 50's and 60's.. and they still have some of the great shows running now... Please understand that this is an example of one place...

Don't misunderstand me, I have seen some awfully great races this last year, but the tracks need to start working on the backgate and then once the backgate fills, the front gate will work out with proper advertising and pushing from both the Track and the racers that are in the backgate...

Please also keep in mind that I have seen some promising things happening in the last year so let's keep our fingers, and toes as well for that matter, crossed that this year will continue on improving...

Hell if I can get back to work, I might get to see the track this year too instead of sitting on the sidelines... Don't get me wrong, I enjoy working on cars, and take as much or more satisfaction from getting the car and racer out to race as from racing itself... Especially when you work with a new racer for the first time (hell for that matter any true racer in general), the look that you bring to their faces is well worth the time that you work on their car...

                    Have a great day all...

Thank you Jimmy, and sorry this got so far off topic. I went for the racing as well but I grew up at a shop where everyone had a race car so it was naturally in the blood. I must admit to chasing the little girls back then but I was more into the dirt flying than anything..
To everyone else, except Don, sorry for the pissing match, carry on.

I never went for video games

All of us are life-long fans, but that is not who I was referring to. I was suggestings things to grab the attention of NEW fans. If we get some new people to buy a ticket, for whatever reason, then we have a chance of turning them into race fans.

Rex just started out complaining about something.

Is that all you got out of it?

As we have all commented on and discussed so many times in the past..

Get people in the backgate and after those people get in, you will get people in the front gate... Without those people that make the show no one is happy...

But I do agree, if we can work on getting the backgate, then we also must work on getting the little ones involved and interested... Hmm let's see a couple scaled down R/C and/or Slot car tracks that look just like the track you are at would be cool... Or get one of these video wizard folks/kids to get the wii and/or a video game likeness of the track they are at...

That would be taking the one step a bit further... Especially since you could say, "Race "such and Such track on the {blank type} video game... I know there may be a cost but I bet you would have a hell of a response with it, from the kids and some adults as well... Hell for that matter you could maybe sell copies of it or additions just like on some of the video games where they have add on race tracks and/or golf courses... hell if you could get it life like, I bet you would sell alot of them to people that race there and/or people who come down during special events, etc. etc. Hell for that matter make a deal with the people at iRacing.. I can think of a couple of reasons where they might be interested in getting some of the Florida tracks online with them..

Again, things take time... Overnight success is something that never happens in real life.. Time is the deciding factor...

                          Just some further thoughts...

Well, with the NASCAR Racing 2003 sim for the PC (that's *very* hard to come by these days - and expensive if you do find it), a lot of the Florida paved short tracks are available (Orlando, New Smyrna, Five Flags, Citrus County, Charlotte County - no Lake City, Bronson, or DeSoto). You can download wedge-type Outlaw Late Models, ABC type Late Models, Street Stocks, Thunder Cars, Sprint Cars, Trucks, everything but maybe Strictly Stocks and Mini Stocks (because of the physics of the sim). rFactor is another very good sim; I've never messed with that one much.

iRacing - ehhh...yeah, it's cool and all, maybe *newer* technology than the NR2003 sim (and iRacing was put together by a lot of the same people), but a lot of people don't like the "subscription" aspect of it; NR2003 you can/could race for free and a lot more car types/race tracks. But then again, hell, talk to Ben Kennedy; see if something can be worked out to get the Florida tracks in there (Lakeland's the only one there now, and it's been gone for what, three years now?).

If you could get someone to set up a few of those on PC's linked together, you could run virtual Orange Blossoms or Governor's Cup - or hell, do like I did a few years back and run a full World Series at New Smyrna racing online!

Oh - and there's a group out of the Daytona area that puts on the annual Speedway Spectacular R/C race over at the "big track" in Daytona during the late March car show. I always thought it would be cool to have R/C racing at that little quarter midget track in the infield at New Smyrna; hell, might as well use it for something....their "regular" track is just up the street off of Clyde Morris and LPGA.
