I Need A Little advice if possible

The doctor has told me that I have no cartilage in either of my knees and I only have bone rubbing against bone. Has anyone in our racing family had knee replacements and if so, how did they go?? Did it work and the pain go away?? Were you able to walk again and go up stairs without tears coming out of your eyes?? Please, I need some help here if anyone has had knee replacements.

i had right knee replaced.when scar turns white , pain is gone. need left replaced. going to use it as long as i can. knee replacement had more pain than 4 bypasses . never want either one again. you have to bend it 120 degrees to ride bike .mine will bend 147 degrees. no way would i have both done at one time .

Cousin had both done, 3 months apart, age 75. 2nd was done in sept, come Nov. he was deer hunting. Another friend must of been late 60's early 70's, had both done at same time, was climbing a ladder doing repairs on houses within 6 months or less. I agree, I would never have both done at same time but I'd hesitate maybe 5 mins if i had "no cartledge". Good luck Jane.

my mom just had both done at the same time 4 months ago. Surgery took about an hour and was up and walking that evening. she had the same problem with cartlidge and had to do both because 1 knee wouldnt support her while she recovered.

I worked with social security for many years and the advances in prosthetic joints has been superb. Remember Jack Nicalaus continued golf after a total hip. One caution, the knee is aPRIMARY weight bearing joint, thus weight management is critical to a good result. I wish you all the best as you go forward.

Thank you for all the honest answers. Right now my left knee is much worse so the doctor would do that one first and then the right later. Just need to know if I can still function after that and what to expect. I do know this bone rubbing on bone hurts like hell and wakes me up in the middle of the night killing me. But thank you all so much.

One Knee Replacement

I did have one knee replaced, but I will tell you that my doctor has been using something called "synvisc" in the other one. It is 3 shots one week apart and it lasts on mine about a year. He says some people have a lot of success, some not so much. It has bought me a lot of time on the one that has not been replaced yet. Might be something to ask your Dr about.

everyone i know that had both done at the same time said they would never do that again. one at a time so you are not totally without use of legs.... just make sure it doesnt stop you from doing the other one. there will be some pain of copurse, but you can handle it!... you can do it... Good luck. I always ask God to lead me and then i know i will make the right choice....

jane i have a friend that has had his hips and both knees

done about 10 years ago - he said he never felt so good he drives a semi tractor and trailor him and his wife over 250.000 miles a year and when he has a birth day or a party this guy can out do chubby checker he can twist and he dances all night . goe.s deer hunting rides motor cycle

my first husbands wife had both knees done last yr. she said it was tough for a couple weeks but she is glad she got it all over with at once. the old man (96) that used to live across from me had both done at once and after a couple days i would see him and his wife walking down our street. if it was me i think id just want to fix everything at once...roflllll id be wrapped up like a mummy... a very large mummy

Because of Alex and his foot, I don't think Dr. Helmy will do both at once. Right now he seems more concerned about my left knee since it is just grinding away he said. But I doubt he will do both at one time because I have to take care of Alex and if he has foot surgery close to my surgery, I have to be able to get him up and down. But the longer I wait, the more bone I lose according to the doctor. I guess I sound like a coffee grinder sometimes.

A co-worker had both of his done at once. Said it was painful, but well worth it. He walks all day delivering mail, and has had no issues. My Mother has 2 knees like yours and refuses to get anything done out of fear. At 64, I wish she would do something!

Only very young people or those in exceptionally good condition should even consider simultaneous replacement. It is imperative that you resume as much activity as soon as possible because as we age when we lose muscle strength and tone it is so difficult to regain it again.

whatever decision you make I will keep you and alex in my thoughts and prayers. sometimes life is really tough but the tough can take it. youve been thru alot and this is just another challenge you will get thru. God bless...
