  • Super Mods at Sandusky

I just got back from watching the Wingless Super Modifieds run at Sandusky Speedway. Sandusky if a flat 1/2 mile paper clip without an outside retaining wall in the corners. The overall track was kind of dumpy but it didn't matter because they put on a hell of a show. This was the first time I have watched the super mods in action and I will tell you that I am a fan for life. Tim Ice put on a show for the win but I was also impressed with Trent Stephens who finished 3rd.
The real story is when Gene Lee Gibsons car stopped right in front of us during a red flag during the heat race. I noticed a small sticker on the hood that said "Rex Engineering" Titusville Fl. I talked to Gene Lee for a few minutes before the feature and it turns out he is David Hollingers (Bonemans brother) driver for his classic super mod. I tried to get a pic of his car but it didn't turn out too well. He led some laps in the feature but broke then got run over trying to get into the pits.

    The 19 of Trent Stephens
22 Super mods showed, 1 flipped during a heat race and I believe 21 took the green for the feature
    the 36 is Jon Henes
The last picture is a failed attempt to get a pic for Rex

I was getting times of 16.0 during qualifying and 16.2 during the race after a brief rain delay. I am guessing with the banking, better track conditions and the corner speed at Nss they would be somewhere around mid 14s to low 15s or faster.

Sure wish they'd bring these cars back to Florida for the Winter Nationals in January like they used to....

Saw the Supers at Miami-Hollywood, Palm Beach, St. Pete, and Volusia County when it was paved.

I was a little surprised to see them wingless also. I haven't followed them in a while. They run without wings at Oswego but I thought they usually ran with wings in the mid-west.
They'd be wicked fast with wings at NSS.

I would bet the super mods are faster than the sprints at Nss. These things are just awesome to watch.

I don't know if this is true but the promoter claimed they were faster on the 1 mile tracks than the Indy cars.

This is probably the MSA (Midwest Supermodified Association) group, that usually races "wingless".

I agree, they would be OUTSTANDING at NSS. They are used to running on some larger tracks, like Thompson (5'8ths), Oswego (5/8ths), and plenty of 1/2 milers. They would put on the show-of-the-year at New Smyrna.

If you've ever seen David Steele run his TBARA car at NSS, it was an impressive sight. Now, imagine 24 of them, quite evenly matched, and running side-by-side throught the pack.

The problem is the price tag... they don't race cheaply, and even Volusia found out they couldn't make enough bucks to justify another event (I think they ran there for 3 years... maybe 4)

They were the MSA "Wingless", but some of the drivers run both. Outstanding at Nss would be the understatement of the year. Even on the tight cornered paper clip at Sandusky they were side by side throughout the field.

Never seen supermods run wingless, but that had to be neat. coldest i've ever been at a track is sandusky for their new year's day show... the wind coming in off the lake... man.

one of my favorite shows, and ive been to several of them, is when toledo had the supermods and the sprint cars the same night. usually they qualify very close, but the last one i went to, i think one of the blondes was overall fastest in the sprinter. gene lee is a hell of a racer -- very underrated as a midget driver -- and his brother, killed 2 years ago, was good too.

Best show around was the ISMA / AVSS Sprints at Toledo Speedway which is a high banked half mile track. Beautiful facility which they flat fly around the place, This year ISMA was replaced by the MSA Winged Supers. The sprints turned in a 12.6 sec. lap being the fastest. They run flat out which is amazing. If you get north this is a race to see!
